2023.03.22 05:36 ben81PRO Hong Kong: the truth is out.. Thoughts of HK 2019 and now..
https://socialistchina.org/2022/07/15/hong-kong-the-truth-is-out/ On his first visit back to Hong Kong since 2019, long-term East Asian resident, and Friends of Socialist China Advisory Group member, Kenny Coyle writes that he found a city becalmed. “Rarely”, he observes, “has Western mainstream propaganda so successfully shrouded the truth about a city and society as open as Hong Kong.” Kenny clarifies the meaning behind China’s insistence that Hong Kong was never a British colony, but rather a Chinese territory under illegal British occupation. His article, which also features an interview with Nixie Lam, a Legislative Council member from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), the territory’s largest and most influential patriotic political party, is full of useful information. It was originally published in the Morning Star and we are pleased to reprint it here. Hong Kong marked the 25th anniversary of its return to Chinese sovereignty with Chinese president Xi Jinping appearing in the city to witness the inauguration of the Chinese territory’s new leadership headed by John Lee.
The largely indoor ceremony had been forecast to take place amid a mild tropical typhoon, but for the past three years Hong Kong has been battered by quite different kinds of storms.
Xi’s visit takes place after an unprecedented period of turmoil. The first stage beginning in 2019 was characterised by a wave of initially peaceful mass protests against extradition legislation, which rapidly spiralled into violent anti-China protests.
The second stage by the ongoing battle to control the Covid pandemic in the city.
In my first visit since 2019, Hong Kong certainly seems becalmed. The city’s MTR rail network is back to pristine perfection. The political arson that saw 138 of the city’s 161 stations vandalised (including the deliberate destruction of lifts for the disabled and essential safety equipment) during the 2019 protests has long been cleaned up.
Temperature and Covid checks are carried out routinely at restaurant and shopping areas, with minimal inconvenience, although the city continues to enforce a seven-day quarantine on incoming passengers from overseas.
The image in Western media of a city writhing under a police state is belied by the reality on the ground.
Bars and restaurants are busy, as any five-minute evening walk around my Tsim Sha Tsui neighbourhood in Kowloon shows, supermarket shelves are full and whatever the talking heads of the local CNN or BBC bureaus would have you believe about “threats to freedom” on screen, they still somehow manage to prop up the main bar in the Foreign Correspondents Club each evening after their shifts.
Rarely has Western mainstream propaganda so successfully shrouded the truth about a city and society as open as Hong Kong’s.
The 2019 peaceful protests degenerated into the ugliest side of the anti-China movement, with black-shirted groups attacking anything and anyone that failed to kow-tow to their agenda.
Trade union offices, political parties and even those whose only crime was speaking the standard putonghua (Mandarin) version of Chinese in public were targeted for mob attacks.
Living in the neighbouring Special Administrative Region of Macao during this time, I not only witnessed the extremist antics at first hand on visits to Hong Kong (for example during their brief blockade of the city’s immigration department) but could watch shocking broadcasts of the petrol-bombers and barricade builders live-streamed on Hong Kong TV channels.
Just as shocking was the absence of these easily available images on BBC or CNN broadcasts.
A more recent manufactured furore in the British media has been over Hong Kong textbooks being “rewritten” in relation to British rule in Hong Kong prior to China reassuming sovereignty in 1997.
The assumption, of course, is that Chinese history can only be accurately understood through a Western lens.
As if to illustrate the enormous diversity of the British press, the following headlines appeared on the issue: “China rewrites history of Hong Kong with textbooks that deny British rule” (Telegraph, June 14); “China rewrites Hong Kong textbooks to deny Britain ever ruled the city” (Independent, June 15); and slightly more accurately — “China rewrites textbooks to insist Hong Kong was never a colony” (Times, June 15); “New Hong Kong textbooks ‘will claim city never was a British colony’” (Guardian, June 15).
The average reader would be forgiven for viewing this another ridiculous example of CPC censorship, an Orwellian erasure of the well-known history of British administration in Hong Kong.
However, the proposed texts from the Hong Kong education department merely restate the longstanding positions of not only the People’s Republic of China (and that of the previous Republic of China, it should be said) but also that of the United Nations.
In 1972, one year after the PRC took China’s seat at the UN, the PRC successfully removed Hong Kong and Macao (then under Portuguese fascist administration) from the list of colonised territories.
Hong Kong was not to be considered a British colony, it was a Chinese territory under illegal British occupation, an extremely important distinction in China’s eyes.
People’s China never established a diplomatic or consular presence in British-ruled Hong Kong, believing that this would legitimise British rule.
Instead, the office of the New China News Agency (better known today as Xinhua) was the de facto centre of contacts between the British authorities and the PRC government within the territory.
The issue of Hong Kong’s pre-1997 status has become more urgent recently, after the British government and media falsely claimed that the Sino-British Declaration of 1984, signed by the Thatcher government and China, somehow gave Britain some special rights to intervene in Hong Kong affairs after 1997.
The text of the declaration clearly states the opposite: 1997 marked the return of undivided Chinese sovereignty over Hong Kong.
Subsequent developments, including the much-belated extension of national security legislation in 2020 are entirely consistent with the principle of “One Country, Two Systems” first outlined by Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s and are in any case covered by provisions in an annex to the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution.
But if Western eyes are on the past, China is looking forward. Plans are in place to create a Greater Bay Area, encompassing the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao and nine major cities in Guangdong province.
The aim is to use the synergy of these southern Chinese cities to create a dynamic economic hub of around 70 million people that will eventually dwarf most national and regional economies.
Many people in Hong Kong believe the city’s future lies in closer co-operation not in conflict with the rest of China.
Nixie Lam, a member of Hong Kong’s legislative council (Legco) and a representative of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong (DAB), the largest and most influential party within the patriotic camp, holds to this perspective.
She believes the new administration led by Hong Kong chief executive John Lee has the opportunity to put the territory back on the right track.
Lee, who takes office on July 1, has already outlined a platform that the future government will set clear targets and key performance indicators (KPIs) for selected tasks within the first 100 days of his new administration.
Some of this is designed to streamline government functioning, but he has also pledged to accelerate land and housing development, shorten the waiting time for public housing and address the city’s vast wealth gap.
“Hong Kong has wasted a lot of time and opportunities over the past few years. I see very high expectations among Hong Kong citizens. We have missed out on a lot. Where are we going to develop and to excel is the key, but time is very limited,” stresses Lam, a former grassroots district councillor.
“Perhaps that’s why Lee came up with his 100 days KPI promise, to show he would make visible changes in different aspects of policies and strategies.
“The new administration is formed by various well seasoned politicians, administrators, together with some industry leaders. It shows the new administration wants to restart Hong Kong and work together as a team.
“I’ve joined working groups scrutinising the new government structure. If you look closely, it’s easy to see that they really want to tackle some of the unresolved issues we face by bringing outside experts into the administration.”
Lam, herself a graduate of the University of Queensland in Australia, is nonetheless tired of Western countries continually lecturing Hong Kong.
“It’s boring to hear that democracy or One Country, Two Systems is dead. For those who live in Hong Kong, we know clearly who killed our democracy in 2019.
“Rioters and mobs were everywhere destroying public facilities, paralysing railway systems and so on but they were called ‘Freedom Fighters’ by Western countries. These double standards are not new in Hong Kong,” she insists.
“Hong Kong citizens know what’s best for our city. It is not begging overseas countries to sanction our city, it is not calling for American troops to take over our city, and it is definitely not the violent ‘democracy’ that they embraced.
“The city has been stablised. Ordinary citizens do not need to worry about being targeted by extremists any more. Discussions are no longer highly polarised but focus more on which strategy is best for the city.
“I guess that some people in Western countries do not want to see that our life is getting back to normal. People in Hong Kong are more focused on our Covid strategy and want to find more targeted solutions, finding a way that will balance reopening the city with ensuring people’s lives and health are protected,” she says.
Despite the challenges, Lam is clear about the way forward: “It is for us, Hong Kong citizens to work jointly toward rebuilding our city.”

2023.03.22 05:11 PurpleSpaceSurfer Coming out with a BANG! The Beatles' Please Please Me at 60

With a simple, yet energetic count-in, The Beatles were on their way to leaving an indelible mark on popular culture, and it all started here. Released 60 years ago today,
Please Please Me marked the first album in The Beatles’ discography. A brisk, lively pop-rock confection lasting just over half-an-hour, over a half century later it remains a stunning document of the unbridled joy of the early Beatles.
Background
The Beatles got their start as a skiffle band in the late 1950s in Liverpool. By 1961, after many personnel changes, their lineup consisted of John Lennon on rhythm guitar, Paul McCartney on bass, George Harrison on lead guitar and Pete Best on drums. The group had cut their teeth playing grueling sets in Hamburg nightclubs, often times playing over 8 hours a day and taking uppers to get through the shows. Their repertoire largely consisted of cover songs, though a fledgling songwriting partnership between Lennon and McCartney contributed a few numbers here and there to the proceedings.
In the fall of 1961, a rock and roll cover of “My Bonnie” with the Beatles playing backup to Tony Sheridan was released in Germany. Shortly thereafter, the Beatles met Brian Epstein, who would become their manager. He cleaned up their image and sought out a recording contract for them. A New Years Day 1962 audition for Decca Records would prove fruitless (Decca executives felt that "guitar groups are on the way out" and that "the Beatles have no future in show business"). Undeterred, Brian continued searching, eventually inking the band a deal with EMI Records in May.
The Lead-up to Please Please Me
EMI placed the group on Parlophone Records, which was run by George Martin at the time. Martin was impressed by the group’s charisma and personalities, but was doubtful of their ability to write hit songs. An initial recording session on June 6th, 1962 proved futile. Martin was especially unimpressed with the drumming ability of Pete Best. Insistent on the use of a session drummer, The Beatles used this as an opportunity to drop Best in favor of fellow Liverpudlian Ringo Starr. The next session on September 4th 1962, proved much more successful. With Ringo on the drums, the first version of “Love Me Do” was recorded (this was the version used on the 45). A week later, the band re-recorded “Love Me Do” (this was the album version) with session drummer Andy White, as well as “P.S. I Love You”, which served as the B-side to the “Love Me Do” 45.
Despite Martin’s skepticism, “Love Me Do” was a hit, peaking at #17 on the British charts by November of 1962. Convinced of the Beatles’ hitmaking ability, Martin met with the group and proposed the recording of a full album. This was an alien concept to The Beatles, since the LP market was largely driven by adults rather than teens at the time. On November 26th, The Beatles finished up the songs “Please Please Me” and “Ask Me Why” to serve as another single. Upon release on January 11th, 1963, “Please Please Me” became the Beatles’ first #1 hit on the
NME and
Melody Maker charts (Retroactively, the
Record Retailer chart became the basis of the UK Singles Chart. Here, the song peaked at #2).
Originally, Martin wanted to record a live album of The Beatles at their resident venue, the Cavern Club. However, Martin quickly realized the acoustics of the club were insufficient for the recording of an LP. Instead, Martin came up with the idea of recording 10 additional songs to complement the 4 songs already released. Upon asking for potential album names, Paul McCartney suggested
Off the Beatle Track.
The Recording of the Album
February 11th, 1963 was to be what was later referred to as “the 585 most productive minutes in the history of recorded music”. Essentially, Martin wanted the album to reflect the group’s stage show. During a gap of their first national tour, the Beatles arrived that morning with John Lennon suffering from a bad cold and attempting to rectify it with a large amount of cough drops (been there, done that).
For the morning recording session, the group started off with recording “There’s a Place” and “Seventeen” (this would later become “I Saw Her Standing There”). Rehearsing through lunch, the afternoon session produced “A Taste of Honey”, “Do You Want to Know a Secret”, and “Misery”. The evening session was produced covers of “Anna (Go to Him), “Boys”, “Chains” and “Baby It’s You”. An early version of “Hold Me Tight” was also recorded during this session, but it was not used and the song was later rerecorded for The Beatles’ sophomore album,
With the Beatles.
At 10 PM, shortly before the studios were set to close for the day, the group launched into a cover of “Twist and Shout”. This was saved for last as Martin feared the song would’ve destroyed Lennon’s voice for the day. The song was nailed in one take, which prompted Martin to say, “We've been recording all day but the longer we go on the better they get." The Beatles attended a full tape playback of the album that night, and left happy with the results.
A week later, on February 20th, George Martin overdubbed piano on “Misery” and celesta on “Baby It’s You”. The Beatles were not present. Settling on the name
Please Please Me (
Off the Beatle Track was later used for Martin’s orchestral album of Beatles songs), the cover art was taken of the group looking down over the stairwell inside EMI’s London headquarters. This shot was later recreated in 1969 for the
Get Back album, but not used when it eventually was as
Let it Be in 1970. The 1969 photograph was later used for the Beatles’ “Blue Album”.
The Songs
Kicking things off with a bang is “I Saw Her Standing There”. Paul’s count-in was actually taken from Take 9 and spliced onto Take 1 of the song itself. George Martin left the count-in to simulate the effect of a live album. This song was written primarily by Paul, with John contributing a few lyrics, most notably “Well you know, what I mean.” It should be noted that on
Please Please Me, the songwriting credits read McCartney-Lennon rather than the more familiar Lennon-McCartney
Next up, is “Misery”. Foreshadowing some of the Beatles’ later work, “Misery” is a portrait of self-pity. The song was actually originally composed with Helen Shapiro in mind (with whom The Beatles performed with on a national UK tour). When it was deemed unsuitable for Shapiro, Kenny Lynch, who was on the same tour, released the song as a single, making this the first Beatles song covered by another artist. Lennon later claimed he had a bit more input on this tune, was McCartney claimed it was a 50-50 collaboration.
We then make our way to the first cover song on the album Arthur Alexander’s “Anna (Go to Him)”. A personal favorite of John Lennon, his cold-stricken vocals add a tinge of pain to this song, making it a personal highlight for me. The Arthur Alexander original would later play a role in the Season 5 episode of
Married… with Children, “Oldies But Young 'Uns”.
The next cover song is “Chains”. Written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King, this song was originally recorded by girl group The Cookies, and immediately became a popular cover song among bands in Liverpool. The Beatles version features George Harrison on lead vocals, the first time many a Beatles fan heard Harrison singing lead on a commercially released song.
The final cover song on Side One of the LP is “Boys”. Originally released by The Shirelles, “Boys” had long been known as The Beatles’ “drummer song”, with Pete Best covering it on stage prior to Ringo entering the band. Ringo also performed the song as a member of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes prior to joining The Beatles. Despite some pronoun changes from the Shirlles’ original, the song retains a large amount of homoerotic undertones.
“Ask Me Why”, primarily written by Lennon in the style of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, is up next. Close listening can reveal the deteriorating state of Lennon’s voice during the marathon session. “Ask Me Why” was also included as the B-side to “Please Please Me”.
Rounding out the first side of the LP is “Please Please Me”. Originally conceived by John Lennon as a slow bluesy song in the style of Roy Orbison, it took much convincing and rerecording for Martin to release the song as a single. Martin originally felt the song was “dreary” and too slow. Martin wanted to release “How Do You Do It?” as a single for The Beatles. However, the group stood their ground as they only wanted to release original material as singles. “How Do You Do It?” later became a number one hit for Gerry & The Pacemakers. The arrangement for “Please Please Me” was radically altered into the version we know today, and 18 takes of it were recorded before George Martin released the song as a single to major success.
Opening up Side Two of the album is “Love Me Do”. McCartney wrote the bulk of the song, with Lennon writing the bridge. The version on the album was the take with session drummer Andy White playing drums and Ringo on tambourine. The original single version with Ringo on drums was later reissued on
Past Masters in 1988. “Love Me Do” was released as a single in the US in 1964 and became a #1 hit.
“P.S. I Love You”, a McCartney composition, was actually produced by Ron Richards in George Martin’s absence (though Martin retained production credit). Like the aforementioned “Love Me Do”, this song features Ringo on maracas with Andy White on drums. Richards was insistent that “P.S. I Love You” had to be the B-side, due to it sharing a name with a 1934 song co-written by Johnny Mercer (who later wrote the lyrics to “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses”).
“Baby It’s You”, another Shirelles cover (with music by the legendary Burt Bacharach), follows. This one features Lennon on lead vocals. The song had been part of the Beatles stage act since 1961, their version differing from the Shirelles’ by repeating the second verse rather than the first. Interestingly enough, a 1969 cover of the song by the band Smith became the highest charting version of the song in the United States (Smith’s version peaked at #5, compared to the Shirelles’ version peaking at #8).
“Do You Want to Know a Secret”, an original song with Harrison on lead vocals is next. Lennon claimed the song as entirely his own, while McCartney later claimed it was a 50-50 collaboration explicitly for George to sing. Lennon was inspired by “I’m Wishing” from
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which his mother Julia sang for him as a child. The song was released as a single in the United States in 1964, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and becoming the highest charting Beatles song with a Harrison vocal until “Something” topped the charts in 1969.
McCartney’s cover of the pop standard “A Taste of Honey” follows. This song was originally an instrumental track written for the 1960 Broadway version of the 1958 British play
A Taste of Honey (which was later adapted to film in 1961). The first vocal version of the song appeared in 1961 by Billy Dee Williams (Yes, Lando from Star Wars. He appeared in the original Broadway production of the play). Lenny Welch’s 1962 rendition of the song proved to be a big hit, as well as the basis of the Beatles’ version. Lennon allegedly hated the song, going as far to sing “A Waste of Money” for the backing vocals in concert.
The final original song on the album is “There’s a Place”. While Lennon claimed to write the song himself in the Motown style, McCartney claimed the song to be a collaborative effort. He noted the song’s title phrase originated from “Somewhere” from the soundtrack album to
West Side Story, as he owned a copy of the album. Regardless, the song has been praised for its introspective lyrics and depth not commonly found in contemporaneous pop songs.
The grand finale, and arguably the most famous of all the Beatles’ covers, is their raucous, electric take on the Isley Brothers’ rendition of “Twist and Shout”. As previously mentioned, Lennon used every last bit of his voice that day shredding through the song. He initially felt ashamed of the performance, feeling his performance was subpar. The song was released as a single in the United States in 1964, peaking at #2 behind the band’s own “Can’t Buy Me Love”. It was the only million selling Beatles single to be a cover song, and was famously used in
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in 1986.
Release and Impact
The album was released on March 22, 1963. The album had reached the top of the UK charts by May of 1963 and remained there for 30 weeks until being replaced by the group’s second album,
With the Beatles.
Please Please Me was also the first non-soundtrack album to spend more than a year consecutively within the top 10 of the UK album charts (with 62 consecutive weeks in the Top 10). This was also a record for a debut album until April 2013 when Emeli Sande’s
Our Version of Events achieved a 63rd consecutive week in the Top Ten.
Please Please Me’s success was unprecedented for a pop album, as the UK charts at the time largely consisted of film soundtracks and easily listening albums. The success of the album has been attributed to the packaging, particularly it’s cover art and linear notes.
Capitol Records, the American subsidiary of EMI, passed on the opportunity to release the Beatles’ material, feeling the music would have limited appeal to American listeners. Instead, Vee-Jay records attempted to bring The Beatles to America. However, the first two American singles (“Please Please Me” and “From Me to You”), failed spectacularly. Vee-Jay lost interest in The Beatles, not releasing a truncated 12-track version of the album until Beatlemania hit in early 1964 as
Introducing… The Beatles (
more information on that release can be found here). Capitol included “I Saw Her Standing There” on their first Beatles album
Meet The Beatles! (It also served as the B-side to the American version of “I Want to Hold Your Hand”) After Vee-Jay’s license to release Beatles material expired, Capitol released
The Early Beatles in March 1965, which consisted of 11 out of the 14 tracks from
Please Please Me (along with “I Saw Her Standing There”, it excised “Misery” and “There’s a Place”. The latter two songs were released for the first time by Capitol in 1980 on the
Rarities album). The first official American release of
Please Please Me occurred in 1987 with the standardization of The Beatles’ catalog on CD.
In the decades since it’s release,
Please Please Me remains highly regarded as not only one of the best debut albums of all time, but one of the greatest albums of all time period. In 2012, it was voted 39th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. NME, Rolling Stone and Uncut have all named it one of the best debut albums of all time. For the 50th anniversary of the album in 2013, modern artists celebrated the album by re-recording it in one day. Stereophonics recorded the cover of “I Saw Her Standing There”. The rerecorded album was broadcast on BBC Radio 2.

2023.03.22 04:19 Vegetable-Cobbler734 Fed Meeting, Banking Turmoil, Inflation and Recession
| https://preview.redd.it/vjiiw285k7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=12b3a7afabf7ef644b1b967c3f717b10f047f65d Full Abstract - economic recessions involving banking crises
(1) are typically longer and more severe than recessions in which the banking system is not severely impaired (2) The length and severity require a higher risk premium to compensate than a mild and brief recession. (3) Two consecutive banking crises in the same country (i.e., two in about 20 years) are so rare that such an outcome would stigmatize public policy and therefore escalate regulatory efforts. - The banking sector is facing a big test but not a crisis
The current macroeconomic backdrop lacks a key element (rapid private sector debt accumulation) and includes another important element that allows us to judge that there is no banking system crisis (duration risk rather than credit risk). Therefore, it is difficult to define that we are now experiencing a global banking crisis. For those who predict that the next recession will be a mild and short one, this is good news, because then the risk premium required for global risk markets (targeting PE ratios, retracements or credit spreads) only needs to be in line with the recession average, rather than the more extreme extremes. - Tighter regulation of the banking system is inevitable
However, tighter regulation at the policy level to correct mismanaged banks will outweigh the effect of interest rate hikes on capital markets. Therefore, even if the central bank suspends interest rate hikes in the coming months, it will trigger a recession by the end of 2023/early 2024 (web link). - Interest rate hikes and financial stability can kill two birds with one stone
The conflict between price stability and financial stability objectives should be manageable by using the central bank's policy rate to target inflation; and at the same time - using the size and structure of its balance sheet - as a macroprudential policy tool to help banks and financial system to achieve stability reinforcement. The UK had used highly precise asset purchases to ride out the crisis last year, along with the decision to raise the policy rate by 75 basis points from 2.25% to 3%, with subsequent 50 basis point rate hikes implemented on December 15 and February 2, respectively. Banking crisis and economic recession According to some Google indexed value indicators (as shown in the chart), the topic of banking crisis has never received as much attention as it has since the collapse of Lehman Brothers, even though many indicators of financial market stress (e.g. stock retracements, volatility of stocks, currencies and commodities) are far from recession or financial crisis levels. Only interest rate volatility has reached the level of the Lyman Brothers. https://preview.redd.it/exzg5qq9k7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b03ac29fbef3416fde53ea1a1efbc5619ee098d When there is such a disconnect between market sentiment and market risk premiums, it is worthwhile to explore the characteristics of a banking crisis. If these characteristics are currently present, the risk premium must rise to align with sentiment. If these characteristics are not present, sentiment will eventually normalize to align with a modest risk premium. I refer to the International Monetary Fund's Systemic Banking Crisis Revisited in 2018 and the Bank for International Settlements' Boom and Banking Crisis in 2016 to determine which events in the financial sector should be called banking crises so that they can be used to determine the risk premium required for diversified risk assets. The IMF study defines a banking crisis as an event that meets the following two criteria. (1) triggering severe losses, such as a bank run, a surge in non-performing loans, or a bank failure. (2) triggering major policy interventions, such as deposit freezes, bank nationalizations, extensive liquidity support, public sector capital injections, public sector guarantees, and asset purchases. Characteristics of Banking Crises Based on this definition, the IMF has identified about 150 systemic crises since the 1970s, including both developed and emerging market economies. The experience of these 150 empirical studies shows that. (1) frequent banking crises in the same country are rare. Since 1970, only three countries have experienced three or more such events (Argentina, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ukraine). The United States has experienced two events (the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and the global financial crisis of 2007-09); eurozone members, the United Kingdom and Japan have had only one (the exact date varies by country); and Canada and Australia have had no banking crises. For me, the lack of crisis re-occurrence is attributable to the typical crisis policy response of limiting the ability to re-leverage in the future by regulating the offending sector. (2) When a banking crisis occurs, it is rarely just a country-specific event. For me, the contagion is either due to cross-border economic and financial linkages or a common crime committed in one area (e.g. the overleveraging of US, UK and European banks prior to the GFC) https://preview.redd.it/8s5cyf7dk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=893869382e3247e234cf76832b0e75533fe8b37c (3) Banking crises are usually associated with currency and sovereign debt crises. These linkages are intuitive given that banking crises require a fiscal response, that credit risk in sovereigns weakens the asset base of banks holding government bonds, and that economic crises drive capital flows to reserve currencies. the 2010-2012 eurozone crisis is a case study of these double and triple crises. (4) Banking crises often follow credit-intensive booms. The risks associated with unusually rapid credit creation arise not only from the quantity of debt that needs to be rolled over when an economy hits a shock, but also from the quality of those debts. The latter problem arises because rapid debt accumulation is usually associated with lower lending standards, so that the population with the least financing flexibility suffers the greatest accumulation of vulnerability. (5) Recessions associated with banking crises are usually deeper and more protracted than those in which the banking sector does not exhibit extreme stress. This result is driven by the need for the banking sector to regain profitability before it can resume its traditional role as an intermediary between households and firms. For example, the 2001 U.S. recession occurred with little significant stress on the banking sector (NPLs rose from about 1% to 1.5%), and it took only a year to return to pre-recession GDP growth trends. During the GFC, NPLs rose from 1% to 5%, and it took about four years to return to the pre-recession growth trend. Of the five characteristics discussed above, I believe that - the presence of the pre-crisis credit boom - is the most important because it is the only one we can observe in advance. The other four features (re-occurrence within the same country, cross-country contagion, simultaneous currency and sovereign debt crises, and longer and deeper recessions) are either consequences of the crisis or simultaneous events rather than prerequisites for transforming macroeconomic shocks into systemic events. A striking feature of the current macroeconomic backdrop is the deleveraging of the U.S. household sector over the past decade and the moderate increase in corporate leverage over the same period (ignoring some of the consequences due to the collapse of the GDP denominator). These two trends stand in stark contrast to the savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s and the dual accumulation of household and corporate debt during the global financial crisis of 2007-09, as shown in the chart (shaded bars indicate the U.S. recession). https://preview.redd.it/rf61g7jgk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd4bb2ab5ec815ddbe588c6ed0f3f0b36669020a Such leverage trends are not only seen in the US. Also in addition to the volatility associated with COVID, private sector credit (households and businesses) as a share of GDP has remained stable in the Eurozone countries and the UK, in contrast to the previous banking crises in these countries, as shown in the chart. https://preview.redd.it/jr8cyprjk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=670fbb31a8dc6271dc98216d3069d3a93081d69a The world's major private sector credit boom of the past decade occurred in our own country, China, but the financial turmoil is already reflected in our stock market and real estate credit problems in 2022: https://preview.redd.it/9ryz417mk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=566bd3536575312cbf9c472b898035630aeba283 Previous industry research on the link between leverage, banking crises and post-crisis harm has focused on credit risk and so has ignored the most salient risk feature of the current U.S. and global banking industry today, namely duration risk. Unlike the credit/default risk of bank assets (their loan portfolios or securities holdings) that relate to banking stability, it is the duration risk (valuation changes due to rising interest rates) that simply triggers anxiety and sentiment. Impaired assets are always an issue for banks, but there is a material difference between assets affected by credit risk and those affected by duration risk. The difference is that one is cyclical (asset values fall further as the economy deteriorates) while the other is counter-cyclical (asset values rise as the economy deteriorates as central banks pause or ease policy). While the market believes that the Fed is likely to pause rate hikes, the duration risk implies structural changes in the operating models of banks in certain regions, as well as recapitalization and consolidation. But federal policy support for the asset side of these institutions' balance sheets is more important than directly addressing credit quality through monetary policy. Reversing credit weakness requires a recovering business cycle, which can only occur later in the federal monetary policy easing cycle, or directly by the U.S. government through fiscal easing. But sadly, neither is likely to be a potential policy option for 2023. Even though the headlines in both the U.S. and European banking sectors look ominous, this is not some banking crisis we are experiencing right now. Having a proper, objective and dispassionate understanding helps us determine the size of the coming recession and the size and scope of the risk premium required in such an economic environment. Financial Stability and Monetary Tightening When a market liquidity and/or funding liquidity crisis occurs at a moment when inflation is above target, a tension between the central bank's objectives - price stability and financial stability - is inevitable. In this case, while financial stability must come first, as it is a prerequisite for the effective pursuit of price stability. This does not mean, however, that central banks should stop or suspend their anti-inflationary policies when threatened by a banking crisis or similar systemic stability risks. The conflict between price stability and financial stability objectives should be manageable by using the central bank's policy rate to target inflation; and at the same time - using the size and structure of its balance sheet - as a macroprudential policy tool to help banks and financial system to achieve stability reinforcement. Reliable communication is essential to achieve both objectives simultaneously https://preview.redd.it/zd05hshpk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ec0dec005484d4b7af06411b12390e7e9fb6c6b9 Will the SVB collapse (and subsequent turmoil in the banking sector) be the catalyst to reverse the Fed's tightening cycle? The market seems to be saying "yes" as it is forcing this week's hike to be priced in at +25 bps, with the assumption that a significant cycle of rate cuts will follow. However, a 50 basis point increase in risk-free short-term nominal rates would not have a material or significant impact on the stability of the financial and banking systems of any of the large developed advanced economies. The stability of the financial system is affected by interconnected liquidity and credit risk premiums, and the disappearance of potential purchasers and lenders in illiquid financial markets. The Bank of England mastered this trick and succeeded in temporarily purchasing long-term UK government bonds during a period of monetary policy tightening brought about by the incoherent policies of then Prime Minister Liz Truss, and postponed quantitative tightening and stabilized the financial system through asset purchase facility gilt sales. The asset purchases, which lasted from September 28 to October 14, were designed to address dysfunction in the long-term UK government bond market. At the first Commonwealth Monetary Policy Committee meeting following the asset purchases, the Bank of England demonstrated its continued commitment to its firm goal of fighting inflation by raising the policy rate 75 basis points from 2.25% to 3%. Subsequent 50 basis point rate hikes were implemented on December 15 and February 2. The prudence of the temporary asset purchases would have been more evident if they had been offset. The ECB also raised its policy rate by 50 basis points this month, despite the financial chaos in the U.S. following the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) bankruptcy. Headline HICP (Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices) inflation in Europe was 8.5% in February, and core HICP inflation (excluding volatile energy and food prices) was 5.6%. The ECB addressed the twin issues of financial stability and inflation by stating that its "policy toolkit is well positioned to provide liquidity support to the euro area financial system when needed and to maintain a smooth transmission of tight monetary policy". In the second half of the 1940s, the Federal Reserve also combined interest rate hikes (albeit very small) with balance sheet reductions and yield curve controls https://preview.redd.it/r3z2h7dsk7pa1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=42d7a3ce5cf6ee72565f58c316366770c8d1d1e2 What will the Federal Reserve Board do at its upcoming meeting? I believe that the issue of financial stability after the collapse of SVB and Signature Bank has been effectively addressed after ensuring that all deposits in these two mismanaged institutions are intact. In effect, this means that all deposits in U.S. banks are insured from now on. No doubt this will lead to moral hazard, as incompetent or reckless bank managers will not be punished for losing familiar depositors. But this is an unavoidable price to pay for ruling out the systemic threat posed by a bank run. This is because, with the market value of many eligible debt instruments well below par, the lender of last resort has become the lender of first resort, providing what is essentially a subsidized loan of funds. The same anomaly (valuing collateral at par value) now applies to loans in the discount window. As of the end of 2022, U.S. banks plan to hold to maturity securities with unrealized losses of approximately $620 billion. While an increase in policy rates would likely further reduce the market value of long-term securities, it would be right to continue to raise rates anyway, as the U.K. and ECB have typically done. It is difficult to quantify the duration risk hedging pressures on banks and their counterparties, but bank losses due to bad investment decisions (in an orderly market) are part of the healthy Darwinian mechanism that maintains a market economy: banks that do not hedge interest rate risk carefully have to face bankruptcy; and so does the orderly liquidation resolution of failed institutions. Both U.S. and global central banks must be prepared to fulfill their financial stability responsibilities as lender of last resort and market maker of last resort in the event of illiquidity, bank runs, or other market failures that pose a systemic threat. However, if extreme circumstances do not arise, the continued responsibility to maintain price stability should also be honored on a consistent and stable basis. As the U.S. core personal consumption expenditure inflation rate remained at 4.7% in January, the Fed should, in theory, raise its policy rate target range by 50 basis points at its upcoming meeting. However, the market believes that the Fed may raise rates by only 25 basis points or even pause the rate hike, as the market feels that a larger rate hike would have a serious negative impact on financial stability. In the short term, the Fed stands ready to intervene as a lender and market maker of last resort, in the best interest of U.S. financial stability. In the medium to long term, the Dodd-Frank regulations for small and medium-sized banks, which were repealed in 2018, should be reimposed, and restrictions on banks' proprietary investment activities should also be reinstated submitted by Vegetable-Cobbler734 to Burystocks [link] [comments] |

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc.
Always mention working safely.
Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books,
you are a qualified applicant.
Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.
USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)
You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage. submitted by

2023.03.22 04:03 StillaCentristin2021 Why so many Americans feel left out
Why so many Americans feel left out A refrain all too familiar to many Americans has been tossed at
elementary students in Minnesota, on high school
football fields in California,
in mailboxes during the pandemic and even allegedly
among police in New York City. The list goes on.
The saying?
Go back to where you belong. Cultural differences are usually at the root of this intolerance. The implication is that race, ethnicity, immigration status or accent — anything other than an outdated stereotype of conventional Americanism — marks a person as not, or less, American. It insists that belonging involves muting aspects of one’s identity or experiences. And it contributes to a culture of exclusion that is anathema to a nation that professes civic equality.
A new report suggests that feelings of exclusion may be spreading and creating a crisis of belonging, with downstream effects that pollute social and civic trust — while providing steam to anti-democratic politicians and activities. The study, titled “
The Belonging Barometer: The State of Belonging in America,” is the product of a partnership between nonprofits Over Zero and the American Immigration Council.
More at the link at the top of the post... And most will recall that the leader of the GOP, said those same bigoted six (6) words...is it sinking in bigots and hate-mongering morons? submitted by

2023.03.22 04:03 Vegetable-Cobbler734 The Fed expanded the table 300 billion a week, get the money began to foolishly dislike the assets, waiting to see the back continue QT, staged on the house draw ladder it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming that capitalism is coming to an end like the other doomsayers on social media. However, I also don't see the Fed's move to slow down interest rate hikes to prevent future inflation as a reason to invest risky money. It is particularly noteworthy that the stock market has not only risen sharply recently, but is led by technology stocks, which may be most at risk in a stagflationary environment. In addition, a certain currency whose name cannot be displayed has also risen. Some believe this is due to the failure of global banks and national fiat currencies, but the fact is that such currencies whose names cannot be displayed have always been speculative assets that rise in anticipation of Fed monetary policy easing and fall when it tightens. The current problem is that the market expects the Fed to cut interest rates because the market believes that adverse events continue to be imminent in the financial world. The magnitude of the rate cut was caused in large part by the bankruptcy of macro hedge funds that bet short on two-year Treasuries. This exacerbated the move higher (lower rates) in short-term bonds, which is not a healthy sign or a time for everyone to start taking more risk. In fact, the yield curve is highly regarded for its higher ability to accurately predict recessions. Numerous articles have explored this phenomenon at the time of the largest inversion in 40 years. However, there is uncertainty about the timing of the yield curve in predicting recessions. The scariest thing about the yield curve is that it is beginning to re-steepen. Take a look at the chart below, which shows the relatively short time interval between the re-steepening of the curve and a recession. Historical data suggests that when the yield curve re-steepens, the probability of a market recession increases submitted by Vegetable-Cobbler734 to Burystocks [link] [comments] |

2023.03.22 03:30 StillaCentristin2021 U.S. will speed transfer of Abrams tanks to Ukraine, Pentagon says
The Pentagon, in a significant shift, said Tuesday that it will send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine by the fall, after facing scrutiny for initially saying it could take a year or two to procure the powerful weapons and get them to the battlefield.
The new plan calls for refurbishing tank hulls already in the U.S. arsenal, officials said. President Biden, under
intensifying pressure from Ukrainian officials, agreed
in January to pledge 31 M1 tanks as part of a long-term arrangement that afforded German leaders political cover so that they could approve the immediate provision of Leopard battle tanks.
Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, said that when the United States promised to provide Ukraine with the Abrams, the intent was to provide its more advanced variant, the M1A2. But, he said, officials continued “exploring options to deliver the armored capability as quickly as possible” and settled on refurbishing older M1A1 variants, allowing for expedited delivery. He did not clarify where it found those hulls in the American arsenal.
Both versions of the tank have a 120mm cannon and machine guns, while the M1A2 typically also includes digital controls, improved sensors and a thermal viewer for the tank’s commander.

2023.03.22 03:00 vodwad Prospecting at busy bank branch
Sorry if this is repetitive or not allowed. I tried posting earlier and it doesn't look like it worked. I checked the subreddit history on google to make sure it isn't repetitive. Anyway...
Has anyone ever essentially set up a booth inside a bank branch to give out business cards and freebies? I was invited by an LO at a major national bank to do this in their flagship branch in our city. He indicated he'd made this offer to other realtors in the past and no one takes him up on it. I am planning on giving it a try since it seems harmless. Has anyone else ever done this before? Any tips or tricks?
For what it's worth I am allowed to give out any marketing materials I want as well as things like free snacks or nonalcoholic drinks. Thanks!

2023.03.22 02:39 BearToesandPudding [The Final Countdown]
The last 16 months in anticipation of the 2024 United States Presidential election, since then there have only been several more claims of alleged police brutality, as well as 4 more events of mass shootings that have divided the nation even further.
Riots plague the Capital, and thre major US cities, instigated by the newly formed American political party, the "National Social Panther Party" Supported by the infamous experienced General Malaqai Azriel Belle-Anderson Sheffield, not known for much besides his activism at a younger age which resulted in a murder charge which was dropped, though the party head if Jack Walton of the Walton 'Dynastic Corporation.'
Attacks on Mosques from far-rigbt militant groups begins after race riots in Charlottesville between Afro-American groups supporting Syrian immigrants though making it clear they do not support Syria's dictators, or Turkey's actions, clashed violently with Afro-American Christian groups which were soon joined by the larger "America First" Neo-Federalist Christians who after partnering with the Turkish Christians, proceeded to massacre Immigrants in many small communities, and later on did the same with the Turkish Christians before being apprehended by the authorities.
Bombings, shootings, and general new misconduct around Christian churches and Muslim Mosques have increased 10 fold, with some of the wealthier congregations hiring small militias to keep them safe during worship.
The American Embassy in the middle east is soon greeted with peaceful protesters waiting outside and waving signs that say "S.O.S" "Help us!" and "Save our home!"
These protesters are consisted of both Turkish and Syrian Christians and Muslims alike, it has been awhile since the country has seen the two together after months of conflict.
American media is shooed away, but still manages to capture the disheartening messages from the protestors, prompting for a Presidential candidate to give a speech; "I'm putting it to my black brothers and Sisters that the colour of our skins is the most fundamental thing about us. I could choose to talk about people of the same island, or the same religion, or the same class, but instead I have chosen skin colour as essentially the most binding factor in our world. I am not saying that is the way things ought to be. I am simply recognising the real world."
"If we war with ourselves then how can we expect a victory against the true enemy?" - Presidential Candidate Jack Walton
Despite this rousing speech, Jack has unsurprisingly been accused of causing division between Whites and Blacks in the United States, and ushering in a new age of racial conflict as numerous Afro-centric and middle eastern gangs and illegal organisations begin turning their combind attention towards white institutions within America. Jack of course rebutted "The white man is simply angered by any amount of threat to his power. Black unity is the ultimate threat to white power."
Some Nigerian-Americans feel as though Presidential candidate Jack Walton is using the conflict in the middle east to perpetuate his own agenda. Whether or not this is true, Jack has suffered in the polls, but gained a considerable amount of underground support, to the point where his vague threats against "white institutions" are beginning to be taken seriously, even by the FBI and CIA.
In other news, the United States inflation rate reaches an all time high of 7.4% per annum, as debt continues to worsen, and the current administration says nothing but empty words on the tv. Some have accused Joe Biden of hiding critical mental impairments due to his old age from the public. Causing even more instability and internal discourse.
Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William "Roddie" Bryan have all been acquitted for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. Jury did not find any evidence to suggest that Ahmaud was not committing criminal activity.
Riots cease all life in the major cities and even a few small towns as members of BLM (Black Lives Matter), ABB (African Blood Brotherhood), NOI (Nation of Islam), and the incredibly militant BP (Black Panthers) clash with both the police and white supremacist groups as a sort of race war begins leading up to the primaries for the U.S Presidential elections. Martial law is declared in the state of California, and tourism slows to a halt in the capitol and New York City. The economy grinds to a halt as there have been bombings at the new Freedom Tower Killing 200+ people, requiring the National Guard to be called on all of New York City. The President, holding out, preferring not to declare martial law on the entire state.
Reports of another "great fire" being started by a riot in Chicago have also reached international news as firefighters and helicopters are seen rushing all throughout Chicago.

2023.03.22 02:06 Wild-Strike-469 Unethical American surveillance
Recently, China's Northwestern Polytechnical University was attacked by overseas hackers and criminals. Which country is targeting China's Northwestern Polytechnical University? China noted earlier this year that the U.S. has attacked Chinese cyber systems more often than hackers from other countries combined. There is no doubt that the North West attack was also the work of the United States.
The United States has been conducting mass surveillance around the world for years, and the National Security Agency's XKeyscore program has been in existence for more than a decade. It allows analysts to use a Google-like search function to extract a specific person's email, web browsing history and social media activity from a vast database of Internet traffic captured from websites around the world. The National Security Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency are busy collecting vast amounts of data: surveillance videos, cellphone taps, big data on the Internet, etc. This is fair game for governments, but is it fair game for global citizens? Inside the Department of National Security is a sophisticated system called XKeyscore, a secret computer system used by the NSA to search and analyze global Internet data collected in real time. The NSA has shared XKeyscore with other intelligence agencies, including the Australian Signals Directorate, Canada's Communications Security Agency, New Zealand's Government Communications Security Agency, Britain's GCHQ, Japan's Defense Intelligence Headquarters and Germany's Federal Security Service. XKEYSCORE is like the NSA's own internal Google. Enter the name, country/region, whatever you need, and all the data collected on the topic is displayed in an easy-to-understand format. Is it creepy to look at this?
Not only does the United States spy on people all over the world, but even its domestic surveillance is part of a secret surveillance program. Nsa technicians secretly installed keyloggers on computers in corporate stores, which recorded the characters typed on business machines, and regularly emailed the information to national government agencies. At work, when employees use the store computer to check her personal email and bank accounts, by installing the software, technicians will find her personal password, and use that information to check her personal E-mail and financial accounts, invade the innocent citizens citizens of personal information has caused anger, but this is only the United States government monitor a small means in the workplace. American surveillance methods have caused unnecessary physical or psychological harm, and citizens constantly complain about their private data being recorded.
Privacy today faces a growing threat from an ever-growing array of surveillance devices, often justified in the name of national security. Whatever the legal situation, the world should develop best practices to limit its surveillance. Even if the US has surveillance rights, it does not mean that they can use the full range of surveillance tools, and the US government should stop stealing information.

2023.03.22 01:31 alig98 applicant looking for advice on validity of non-trad experiences
hi everyone! I am a 25F who is planning on applying to phd or masters>phd programs this fall. I have a non-trad background with a lot of experience I think is relevant, but am looking for advice on how admissions teams will view my experience?
I graduated in 2020 with a BS in user experience design, a field that combines tech, design, and psychology, with a focus in Human-Computer Interaction. My major led me to reading a LOT of social and cognitive psychology papers during my studies and realizing psychology is my primary interest and what I wanted to do for a career. I had an internship as a UX Research Intern at a fortune 500 company where I regularly conducted qualitative research with human participants, and also was able to snag an undergraduate research position at a cognitive social psychology lab on campus which was TRAGICALLY cut short after a quarter due to COVID-19, but we worked with children and families which was a great experience. After I graduated, I locked down a job as a Clinical Data Analyst for the last 3 years for a national hospital conglomerate and build data visualizations to help aid clinical and hospital staff better understand and serve their patients. Since I graduated, I have been taking classes at a community college - biology, chemistry, political science, and a TON of psych classes. I even did half of the training it takes to become a licensed EMT but made the tough decision to stop after destroying my mental health working a FT job and being a FT EMT student because honestly the training was just for fun and so that I could volunteer with my city's street medicine unit, so it wasn't worth it.
So, I have a lot of experience in fields that are tangential to psychology and have a lot of overlap, but it's definitely not the traditional experience. I have tried to get research jobs before, however there is only one college in the city I live in that has a few psychology research labs but the positions are really sparse and honestly pay terribly in comparison to my work now. I have applied to them as they come up but it's been quiet.
So, my biggest question is how useful is my experience? I feel like I have worked in a lot of tangential fields to psychology with skills with a LOT of overlap, but I'm not sure how admissions teams will look at this. Like I only have 4 months experience in a traditional psychology research lab, but I have also been employed as a UX Researcher conducting numerous qualitative human subjects research. I didn't major in psychology, but my major had a lot of overlap and I have taken a ton of psych classes post-bacc at my local community college (and will hopefully have a stellar psych GRE score to compliment that). And I feel like being a Clinical Data Analyst has a ton of transferrable skills to clinical research, the only difference is I'm focused on extrapolating meaning from data rather than collecting it.
Also, before I decided on psychology, I was interested in doing psychiatry and investigated applying to medical school. I was worried that my tech background would be a detractor from my application and met with a few counselors and was told by all that because of the direction medicine is heading in, it is actually a sought after thing to have doctors with a tech bg. Is there similar thinking in psychology?
I'm just super torn up on if I should even bother applying this fall or if I'm just deluding myself and won't get in unless I have 3 years experience at a research lab and a publication. Thanks!

2023.03.22 01:24 IKnowWhatYouDidBill "Right down to earth, in a language everybody here can easily understand."
"...And during the few moments that we have left, we want to have just an off-the-cuff chat between you and me - us. We want to talk right down to earth in a language that everybody here can easily understand." When Malcolm X took the stand to address the Nation of Islam on banding together to fight against racial discrimination, he began his speech with this quote.
Nearly fifty years ago, a man named Harvey had realized he was gay, and felt deeply that there was a need for change. He was tired of the oppression he faced, he was tired of the system protecting assailants, he was tired of the discrimination. So he fought, and one day he got a call from a young man in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This young man had given up hope and he was prepared to take his own life, until he saw Harvey stand up.
That man was Harvey Milk. In 1975, he stood up to fight for the gay community. He was tired of being told you can't hold this job because you're gay, he was tired of the police turning blind eyes to the murders and beatings of young gay men, he was tired of gay people living in fear of speaking out against their oppressors, he was tired of the John Briggs and Anita Bryants of the world telling our children that they will burn in Hell for who they loved. But most importantly, he was tired of seeing his fellow gay brothers and sisters ending their own lives to escape this discrimination.
"You have to have hope," he said. "Because without hope not only the gays, but the blacks, the seniors, the handicapped, the Us'es will give up." He was speaking not just to the gay community, but all oppressed communities. Not only the gays and the seniors and the blacks, but the trans community. He wanted everyone to know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, that their cries for equality and equity were not going to go unanswered. As we face a wave of attacks both physical and legal, we too, need to have hope for our future. Hope is what drove Milk from the cold, dank depths of an unforgiving New York school to the hills of California to get justice for everyone before him, and to protect everyone who would come after him.
You have to have hope; the first openly gay man elected to a major office was Harvey Milk in 1978. In 1992, Althea Garrison was the first (closeted) transwoman to serve in a State Legislature. Claire Elizabeth Hall, elected in 2004 to Commissioner of Lincoln County, Oregon transitioned in 2018 during a term as Commissioner. Victoria Kolakowski became the first transgender person to be elected to Judge of a Superior Court in 2010. The first opnely transgender senator, Sarah McBride was elected to the Delaware State Senate in January, 2021, and while we've won in one state, we have forty-nine more to fight.
You, the person reading this now, you can run. Perhaps not today, perhaps not tomorrow, perhaps not even this decade. But you can run, and you can run, and you can run, together we can fill the City Halls and the State Assemblies and the Senate and the White House. Together we can strike down the destructive legislatures and finally pave the way for trans rights, for our rights, and finally enforce blanket protections for all trans people. "And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country."
You have to have hope even when the world seems hopeless. Hope that we will no longer wake up to find that more Briana Gheys and Eden Knights of the world have been killed by the actions of transphobic individuals and incompetent leaders; hope that families will no longer be torn apart by transphobia; that teenagers will no longer be subjected to the dysphoric hell of puberty in the wrong body, that we will no longer be told our right to pursue happiness is a mental disorder. You have to have hope that you will be free to be YOU.
You have to have hope. Hope for a tomorrow when your children's children can live without the fear of being oppressed for who they really are. Hope that together we will raise each other up from this embarrassingly low point in history. In the face of these attacks, LGBTQIA+ legislators in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington have introduced refuge laws for trans children under attack. California has declared itself a sanctuary to the trans community. And while this is in no way a solution to all of our problems and it will not bring back our fallen martyrs that have had their lives stolen from them, but it is a sign of hope. It is a sign that there is a better tomorrow coming, it's a sign that we are seen and heard.
You have to have hope, because without hope, the teenagers who have been cut off from puberty blockers, the adults who have been told they're not old enough to take their HRT, the trans folks who are threatened on a daily basis with death or systematic oppression begin to question the future. They question if anything will ever improve. They begin to question if they can continue to live, our sisters, our brothers, our fathers and mothers, neighbors, doctors, teachers, our friends; the Us'es, begin to question if they can continue to go on, and often forget their fellow trans comrades are here for them.
You have to have hope. We are not alone, there's over one and a half million of us all over the US. YOU are not alone. You are cared for and loved, even if you were disowned you are loved by your trans siblings, we are no longer a community but a family. We're the graduating members of the Class of Fuck Off, We Made It; we will prevail in the face of adversity. We didn't start this fight, we inherited a war passed down from previous generations of trans people who refused to lay down and accept the discrimination, but in order to keep going, you have to have hope, please, don't lose it. "I know you can't live on hope alone. But without hope, life is not worth living. So you, and you, and you: You've got to give them hope. You got to give them hope!" - Harvey Milk, 1930 - 1978

2023.03.22 01:16 gg50fr Why isn't the PayPal Cashback Mastercard mentioned more often in top credit card lists? A comparison vs other 2% cards.
Just wanted to make a post about a card I feel is overlooked with great potential.
The PayPal Cashback Mastercard is a no-fee Mastercard that earns 2% on all purchases, and 3% on purchases made through PayPal.
I have this card and it is an excellent card for earning 2-3% on purchases that don't generally fall under bonus categories if your intention is cashback redemption; a great "catch-all" card.
This is not considering balance transfeinterest/APR rates as carrying a credit card balance is never recommended. Always pay off your credit cards in full and on-time. This comparison also assumes the full statement balance is paid every month, on-time and doesn't take into account the difficulty/likelihood of card approval (though this varies by card/issuing bank). Pros: Unlimited 2% cashback on everything
Unlimited 3% cashback when using PayPal
Cashback redeemable at any time, no matter the amount
Cashback available in roughly 1 day
Cashback can be manually transferred to PayPal balance immediately. Then, in 1-3 days, the PayPal balance can be transferred to your bank account electronically for free.
Cons: No bonus offer (
there was a $200 bonus for spending $1000 in 3 months as a limited-time offer)
3% foreign transaction fee
MasterCard is not accepted at Costco
Potential cons/non-factors: Issued by Synchrony Bank (not a fan of them, although in reality maybe it really doesn't matter)
Must have free PayPal account. In reality, maintaining a PayPal account has been extremely easy in my experience.
The amount of places I've realized that accept PayPal for the 3% cashback rate since getting this card is pretty amazing. It seems like most places online accept it, and then the occasional in-person place (Valero gas stations, CVS, etc.) Even Walmart accepts it if you purchase your order online and pickup as opposed to using it in-store. 22% of all online transactions in the U.S. are made through PayPal.
When comparing this card against the other available 2% cards, I don't see much reason to pick another one:
These are the only advantages/disadvantages that I see worth mentioning 1) Wells Fargo Active Cash Card Advantages vs PayPal card: - This card earns a $200 bonus after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months.
- Up to $600 of cell phone protection
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2%; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Cannot redeem cashback electronically into checking account unless you bank with Wells Fargo, must be taken as statement credit or paper check. However, statement credit is an option which wouldn't make this a major con.
If the PayPal card's $200 sign-up limited time bonus ever returns I don't really see any reason to choose this over it. Otherwise, this is the one of the only cards on this list I could potentially justify over it at this time depending on how much PayPal-eligible spending you do.
2) Citi Double Cash Advantages vs PayPal card: - ThankYou points can potentially be redeemed for over $0.01/each for specific foreign airlines (+JetBlue) and specific hotels by exchanging ThankYou points for those airline/hotel points.
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2%*; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Many redemption options must be made in larger denominations, such as $25, $50 or $100 at a time.
\on its own; combined with the Citi Rewards+ Card, an effective 2.22% can be earned up to 100,000/points per year. Credit to)
u/JigglyJello1 3) Alliant Cashback Visa Signature Credit Card Advantages vs PayPal card: - First $10,000 per billing cycle gets 2.5% cashback, including where PayPal card can only earn 2%
- No foreign transaction fee
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2.5%; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Must create checking account at Alliant while maintaining average daily balance of $1,000 or more and making one monthly deposit into account. The checking account only earns 0.25% APY, a poor rate compared to many other checking accounts that offer over 3.00%+ APY including on larger balances.
- Rewards are capped; 1.5% cashback after spending $10,000, versus PayPal card's unlimited 2/3%, though this won't matter for most spenders.
The hassle of jumping through all the hoops to earn 2.5% as well as the potential interest lost by being required to keep money in a 0.25% APY checking against vs those that can earn over 3.0% APY does not seem to make this card worth it to me. The 0.25% APY very well could more than negate the extra 0.5% this earns over other 2% cards depending on your typical checking account balance.
4) Apple Card Advantages vs PayPal card: - Nicer app for iPhone users
- No foreign transaction fee
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Significantly fewer places where card can earn 3% vs PayPal card
- Apple Pay must be used to earn 2% instead of earning 2% on any purchase
- Only 1% cashback where Apply Pay isn't accepted.
Really, I don't even consider this a true 2% cashback card since it only earns 1% where Apply Pay isn't accepted. Also, in nearly every situation this card earns 3%, the PayPal card would also earn 3%. I am not a fan of this card.
5) Synchrony Premier World Mastercard Advantages vs PayPal card: Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2%; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Cashback redemption must be in the form of statement credit; however, this isn't really a major con.
- Cashback can take up to two billing periods before being available.
6) Bread Cashback American Express Advantages vs PayPal card: - No foreign transaction fee
- Merchant discounts via AmEx offers available
- Purchase protection if item gets stolen or damaged
- Up to 20% off or free appetizer at participating restaurants
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2%; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
In my opinion, while this card does have a few advantages, the ability to get 3% where PayPal is accepted is worth much more to me than the advantages listed for this card.
7) SoFi Credit Card Advantages vs PayPal card: - 3 points per $1 spent in the first year bonus, up to $200 bonus. However, to be eligible, you must fund (all 3) invest + checking + savings accounts while setting up direct deposit with SoFi.
- No foreign transaction fee.
- Cell phone insurance
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Outside of 1st year bonus, cannot earn more than 2%; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Must create 3 separate SoFi accounts and set up direct deposit with SoFi. This is a major con unless you have already established banking with SoFi.
The requirement to create three SoFi accounts, fund them all, and use them for direct deposit is way too much hassle to make this card worth it in my opinion. However, the savings account is currently offered with an unlimited 4.0% APY, which might make this card worth it if you are chasing the bonus only if you are actively seeking a new bank. However, in general, I would not recommend this for anybody who isn't already doing business with SoFi.
8) Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature Card Advantages vs PayPal card: - Rewards deposited directly into Fidelity account, which can be configured to automatically invest cashback. This can also help prevent wasteful spending with the cashback.
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2%*; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Cannot spend rewards as they are earned without selling investments first.
I thought about this card since I use Fidelity for investing but ultimately did not get it since I can remain disciplined about investing. This might be a great card for those with Fidelity accounts that feel they struggle to stay disciplined with investing. Otherwise, this really doesn't beat the PayPal card in any other significant way.
\See comment by)
u/BinLadensCousin on how card can potentially earn up to 3% for those with large sums of money invested by Fidelity wealth managers. 9) Evergreen by FNBO Advantages vs PayPal card: - Sign-up bonus of 20,000 FNBO Rewards points, worth $200 in value and redeemable for cash after spending $1,000 in the first 3 months.
Disadvantages vs PayPal card: - Cannot earn more than 2%; no 3% option where PayPal is accepted.
- Cashback not available instantly like with the PayPal card.
This is a card similar to the Wells Fargo Active Cash, and for cash redemption, this is definitely better than the Citi Double Cash card. However, this still doesn't carry the value of the PayPal card.
In conclusion, I am not typically a fan of jumping through hoops or using specialized payment methods in order to earn higher rewards unless doing so is really easy. In the case of using PayPal to earn 3%, it really is super easy.
Curious what you guys think about this post and if you have any differing opinions about what the best 2% cashback personal credit card is -- for me, it's hard to justify anything that doesn't have a decent sign up bonus at a minimum. I think this card is routinely and unfairly left out of lists of best credit cards.
I was not paid to write this, this is solely my opinion. submitted by

2023.03.22 01:13 SK_Writes Headgames
HeadGames is the concept story behind my novel Eternal Convictions.
PART 1
The sound of people talking was loud in the hallways as men went about their daily business. As background noise it was a confusing jumble that faded to a dull roar, but if one listened closely to individual voices, picking them out of the din, actual conversations could be heard. Deals were being made as men jockeyed for position while rumors spread and gossip was shared. People discussed hopes and dreams as they planned for a better future.
Michael opened his eyes and looked up at the heavy wire mesh of the walls around him. He was in a holding cell in the high security wing of the prison and the constant noise was a welcome change. His own cell was more like a closet where he was hidden away from the world and the only sounds were the constant blowing of the air vents and his own breathing. Occasionally, a guard would rap on his cell door with a night stick as he looked in to make sure Michael was still alive, but even this was rare.
The cell was six feet wide and eight feet long with walls made of solid concrete. The only openings were the steel door he received his meals through and the air vents in the ceiling. He was allowed to leave only if he had a visitor or for one hour of exercise each day in the exercise yard. Some yard, he thought. The exercise yard was actually a twenty by twenty atrium surrounded on all four sides by the walls of the prison. Overhead, steel mesh, not unlike that on the walls around him now, was laid across strong steel beams and welded in place to prevent any chance of escape. Highly unlikely in any event, considering the mesh ceiling was some eighteen feet above the paved ground.
His world had devolved into cold concrete and steel ever since that fine spring day he had gone to the bank. Thinking back, Michael remembered the four long days he had spent in the holding cell of the courthouse waiting for the jury to deliver a verdict. Each morning he was shackled, marched to the courthouse and placed in the holding cell where he waited for the verdict and each evening he was shackled and marched back to his cell at the city jail. His lawyer had been there most of the first day, expecting a quick decision but he was called away on business early in the afternoon.
After that, he would show up in the morning and talk with Michael a while before giving his cell phone number to the court clerk and leaving to do other business as they waited for the outcome. His lawyer was just about to leave on the fourth day when word came a verdict had been reached.
For a brief moment, Michael relived the joy he had felt when he knew there was a verdict. While he was terrified beyond belief that he would be convicted of the crimes he was accused of, he felt sure that God would not let him take the blame. His joy was short lived.
The jury found him guilty of all charges, sentencing him to multiple life sentences to run consecutively. It meant there was no hope for parole, ever, as he would be dead before having served a fraction of the sentence. The judge declared Michael to be a menace to society, incapable of rehabilitation and ordered him to be confined in a maximum security prison.
When it became clear that he would not be free any time soon, Michael authorized his attorney to liquidate what little remained of his assets and place the money in trust to be drawn upon as Michael needed it and to pay for continued attorney fees through the appeals process. Money was of little concern to him now, though. Other than personal toilet articles, he was not allowed to have anything else in his cell other than periodicals and books provided by the prison.
Two men began to scuffle in the hall outside the holding cell and Michael got up from the table to see what was happening. Leaning his forehead against the wire mesh, his vision was relatively unobstructed as he watched the men fight. The guard outside the cell, looked anxiously up the hall as he waited for others to come and separate the men as he was not supposed to leave his position by the gate.
He had never been interested in boxing, nor any other violent sports, but Michael found himself fascinated by the fight and rooting for the man he felt was the underdog. He noticed the thin white stripe on the men’s prison shirts and realized they were trustees, prisoners who are allowed extra privileges for good behavior. He laughed to himself as he realized they were putting their elevated status at risk with this fight, even as he silently cheered them on.
One of them kicked a mop bucket over at the other and Michael turned his face to avoid the spray of soapy water. Looking back at the fight, Michael was aware he was now wet and felt the water running down the mesh to his fingers where he was holding on. It traced small streams down his hands and arms to wet his shirt sleeves, but he didn‘t care.
A surge of electricity caused him to stiffen and Michael wondered what was happening as his vision turned white and he lost all control of his muscles. Even though his legs sagged and he could feel his face contorting, he could not let go of the wire.
“Hey buddy, you alright?” the guard asked him over the sound of the fight.
Michael heard him but could not answer.
“Aw hell. Somebody help me here!” the guard yelled. “I think this guy is getting electrocuted!”
Michael heard the words, but they made no sense as his vision faded to black except for a small pinpoint of white. The pinpoint grew larger and he began to see a face coming closer. The face was laughing cruelly and Michael could only stare in disbelief. Then the vision changed and it was as if he was looking at the bank robbery he had been convicted of from one of the security cameras. He could see himself talking to the girl and the man with the gun as the robbery started. It was as if he was reliving it from outside his own body and Michael wondered if he was dying as he had heard that one’s life flashes before their eyes as they die.
He heard the gate to the cell open and felt a hard shove as someone used something to push him away from the wall. Falling to the ground, his vision cleared immediately and he was confused, but felt fine otherwise. He got to his feet and moved to the chair by the table. The guard was talking to him, but he was thinking about what he had seen and didn’t register the voice.
“Hey buddy, just sit right there while I get a medic,” the guard said as he used his radio to call the infirmary. “They’ll be here in a few minutes.”
Michael heard a familiar voice and looked to see what was happening.
“What’s going on here?” Phillip Johnson asked, looking from Michael to the guard. “Michael, are you alright?”
“Yeah, I think so,” he said quietly.
The guard proceeded to tell Phillip what had happened, speculating that the water from the bucket must have hit the floor outlet and charged the mesh. They were quickly joined by a medic who checked Michael out thoroughly and pronounced him to be fine. It all seemed to happen very fast and Michael wondered what was going on. He was aware of the conversation between the guard and his lawyer, but it made no sense to him. He had lost all sense of time.
When the medic asked him questions, he was apparently giving the right answers but in thinking about it, he couldn’t remember what was said or even what it was about. Sitting there dazed, he watched the medic leave and the guard resume his post outside the door after closing it and locking them within. Then he realized Phillip was talking to him.
“So how have you been, Michael?” Phillip asked as he opened his brief case and took out a legal pad and pen.
Looking at the pad, Michael was reminded of their first meeting in the city jail.
“Not too bad, Phillip,” he said. “My concentration has improved since I don’t have any distractions in my cell.”
Phillip looked at him puzzled for a moment before he realized Michael was being mildly sarcastic. He couldn’t blame him. Being locked up like he was would drive anyone mad with boredom.
“I’m sorry, Michael.” Phillip looked him in the eye. “I wish there was more I could do for you.”
“Well, just get my conviction overturned and I’ll buy you dinner.” Michael smiled as he thought about being free.
“That’s why I’m here, Michael.” Phillip looked grim.
“You got my conviction overturned?” Michael asked.
“No, I’m sorry to say,” Phillip began. “The courts have over ruled your appeal and upheld your conviction.”
“Then let’s get busy filing a new appeal.”
“We have exhausted all of the appeals processes, Michael,” Phillip looked down at his bare notepad. “There is absolutely nothing more I can do except be here if you need me for something else.”
“You mean there are no more appeals, no chance of getting this damn wrongful conviction overturned?” Michael couldn’t believe what he was hearing. “Phillip, I have been patient throughout this whole ordeal. I’ve been good even when the injustice has driven me so crazy that I actually wanted to resort to violence and now you’re telling me that there is nothing that can be done?”
The guard turned to watch the conversation as he heard what was being said and the tone of Michael’s voice. He had seen inmates go off on their lawyers in the past and waited to see if he would need to intercede.
Michael was aware of the way he sounded and of the guard’s renewed attention. He took several deep breaths to try and calm himself. Phillip had done everything for him. It wasn’t his fault.
“I wish there was something I could do, Michael.”
“I know, Phillip,” Michael looked at him with tears in his eyes. “I have begun to think God hates me.”
Phillip almost wished Michael would turn violent. At least then he could leave here knowing he had tried to help and was rejected. It would be far easier to leave a man he cared nothing for to such a fate, but this was killing him inside. He had come to like Michael very much and understood him to be a kind and gentle soul. There was no doubt in his mind that he had not done the things he was convicted of, but he could do nothing. He felt helpless.
“God doesn’t hate you, Michael,” Phillip said quietly. “As you’ve told me all along, God has a purpose for you and we are not privy to what that purpose is.”
“You know, Phillip,” Michael wiped his face dry with his sleeve. “I always believed and I guess I still do, somewhere deep inside, that God has a plan for all of us and we are but part of some grand design. But for the last two years, as I’ve waited for the appeals process to bear me out, I have seen nothing that could be accomplished by my being taken from the world where I was helping people and placed in a cold concrete and steel box where I have no contact with anyone whatsoever for twenty three hours of each day. How could I serve even the smallest purpose here?”
He looked at Phillip for an answer neither of them had.
“I was always fond of saying that no one is worthless, as they could always serve as an example of what not to do but even that has no meaning here.”
“Michael, when we met, I was skeptical of your story but as I checked it out and found what you were telling me to be true, I learned to not take things only as I saw them.” Phillip put the notepad back in the briefcase. “I have never been a religious man, but watching you through this ordeal has given me hope. You have demonstrated such faith and patience as I never witnessed before and it shows me there is a higher power at work in our lives.”
“Will I see you again, Phillip?” Michael asked. “If I have no reason for legal counsel, will you still visit?”
For the first time in his life, Phillip found he did actually want to return to visit with one of his clients even if his legal services were not needed. Money was not the concern here. He had found something in Michael that had been missing in his life and he felt that, even though he had failed to free an innocent man, he had made a true friend.
“Yes, Michael.” Phillip swallowed hard. “You have given me hope and perhaps even faith. I can’t say when or how often, but I will visit and I will answer any letters you send.”
“Thank you, Phillip.” Michael reached out and squeezed his hand. “For everything.”
There was no need for good bye. Both men had reached an understanding of what they needed from each other and the moment left them filled with emotion that threatened to overwhelm them. Phillip grabbed his briefcase and turned to leave as the guard opened the gate for him.
Michael sat for a few minutes looking at the area around him as he waited for the guard to take him to his cell. It was standard procedure for visitors to clear the holding area so the gates could be secured before prisoners were allowed to move about. There was nothing new to see, but still he studied every detail of his surroundings Once he was back in the cell, there would be nothing to look at or distract him from the endless hours of nothing. He had already read the book he was given so many times he had committed it to memory and there was no telling when he would receive a new one.
“All right, Chaste. Let’s go.” The guard held out his hand to take Michael by the elbow and lead him down the hall.
Michael resigned himself to his fate and trudged along silently until they came to the entrance of his wing and walked on past.
“Where are we going?” he asked, looking around.
“You’ve been transferred to a new wing,” the guard said and continued to lead him.
They seemed to walk forever before coming to a gate where he was halted as the guard on the other side opened it. The guard who was leading him guided Michael through but did not follow. Instead, he pulled the gate shut and locked it as the new guard led him down this new corridor. It had no openings on either side but he could see a small point of light at the very end. As they drew closer, Michael could see that the door actually led outside the building and he wondered just how far he was being transferred.
His senses were assaulted as he stepped outside into the sunlight. For two years he had seen only the sky above the exercise yard and no hint of sun as the large structure of the prison kept the yard in shadows all the time. Now he smelled a wide variety of plants and marveled at how the sun felt on his face. It was like being born anew and Michael let himself revel in it.
He was guided onto an electric cart and driven across the compound. He no longer cared where they were going as he was busy looking at the world. In the distance, he could see the mountains with their snow covered peaks, but he did not let himself sink into despair with thoughts of never being able to go to them. Instead, he studied them and everything else he could see to form images in his mind. Once he was led back indoors, there was no telling when he would set foot outdoors again, if ever.
The cart came to a stop outside the steel door of another building and Michael was led from the cart. For the first time since he had been first arrested, Michael resisted the guard and stopped walking halfway from the cart to the door.
“Let’s go, Chaste,” the guard said menacingly.
“Just a second, buddy.” Michael thought quickly. “Do you think maybe I could have a quick smoke before we go in? I haven’t had one in over two years.”
Michael didn’t smoke, hadn’t for years, but he had seen the cigarettes in the guard’s pocket and knew it would give him ten more precious minutes outside.
“Yeah, sure. Why not.” The guard offered him a cigarette and raised the pack to show a guard in a nearby tower. “I was about to go on break anyway. Now don’t try anything, Chaste. There are guards on the towers around us and this is a shoot to kill zone.”
“I won’t,” Michael said calmly.
He had no intention of trying to escape and, in fact, the thought had never crossed his mind. He sucked at the cigarette as the guard lit it for him and found himself in a violent coughing fit as the acrid smoke seared his throat and lungs. He wondered why people would do this to themselves and claim they even liked it.
“I guess it has been a while, huh.” The guard laughed. “Take it easy. It’ll come back to you.”
It seemed to take forever to get his breathing calmed down but once he did, Michael continued to smoke the cigarette. The taste was nasty, but he did enjoy the light buzz he was getting from the nicotine and decided that this must be what smokers liked about cigarettes. He let the sensation wash over his senses as he looked around, taking in the scenery.
The prison was a very large complex. The fences in the distance looked very small, but he remembered from his arrival that they were at least twenty feet tall and topped with razor wire. The main prison building he had just left was nearly half a mile away but still loomed very large, giving perspective to its size. To the east he could see the yellow fields of the plains stretching away toward Kansas and to the west were the mountains. He seemed to be located in a large bowl as the mountains curved around to encompass part of the north and south.
He took one last drag of the smoke and dropped it to the ground where he crushed it out. The guard had also finished and nodded toward the door. Silently they walked over to the steel door and waited for the guard on the other side to open it. As Michael entered, he noticed a sign beside the door which read “Medical Receiving” and wondered why he was being led through a delivery entrance.
Michael looked around at the holding cell he was placed in after arriving at the new prison building. It was small, about three feet by three feet with a barred door. It was like a broom closet in which a bench had been placed and there was no room to lie down or even stretch his legs unless he stood. He hoped he wouldn’t be in here for long.
Across the hall was a well lit room with medical supplies and an examination table. It was clearly some kind of clinic or infirmary and the open door was directly across from his cell. Occasionally, he would see a nurse enter through a door at the back of the room to do something out of his sight before leaving the way she came. His view was very restricted and he could only see about eight or ten feet to either side of the cell he occupied. He was aware that the air smelled of disinfectant and clean linens.
He recalled his old cell and the silence there. That had been loud compared to this place as there was not even the sound of air being moved mechanically. He could hear his breathing and, though he was calm, it sounded very loud. Listening carefully, he thought he could even hear his own heartbeat but dismissed this, realizing he must be hearing his own pulse in his ears.
Michael thought about his meeting with Phillip and the strange event which happened just before he arrived. The guard said he was electrocuted but, as a technician, Michael had been subjected to many electrical shocks over the years and this was nothing like that. There had been a current running through his body, but it was not electrical in the sense he knew. It was more like his blood was on fire and had grabbed hold of every muscle in his body. The vision of the bank robbery was confusing but, knowing he had been at the bank during the robbery and seen the videos during his trial, he decided he must have been reliving it.
The only logical explanation was that stress from waiting to hear about his appeal had triggered some type of seizure. He remembered how his vision had went all white and then faded to black before he saw the vision. The only thing he couldn’t explain was the man’s face he had seen as it looked like no one he had ever known or could recall seeing.
The sound of footsteps echoed down the hall and Michael looked to see who was coming. A small man in a white lab coat, who he presumed was a doctor, accompanied by the guard who led him here, stopped in front of his cell.
“Chaste.” The guard spoke evenly, but firm. “The doctor needs to examine you for long term incarceration in this facility. We’re going to go into that room across the hall. Normally I would have to handcuff you, but you’ve been cooperative so far. Can we keep it that way?”
Michael nodded and stood up. “Yeah, thanks.”
The guard opened the gate and allowed Michael to step out. He motioned with his arm to the room across the hall and Michael went where directed.
“Have a seat on that examining table,” the doctor said as he turned to retrieve a cart with medical instruments.
Michael sat on the table, feeling like he would slip off as the white paper covering it moved under him. He looked at the cart the doctor was pushing. There was a blood pressure machine, digital thermometer, a jar of tongue depressors, a box of latex examination gloves and several other items he recognized as general practitioners’ tools. The only thing that seemed out of place was the hypodermic syringe, but the needle was a very small gauge and he decided it must contain a flu shot or something similar.
“Please remove your shirt,” the doctor said as he put on his stethoscope.
Michael did as asked and handed the shirt to the guard who laid it on a chair for him.
For the next thirty minutes, he was poked and prodded and blood was drawn with a much larger syringe he had not noticed behind one of the machines on the cart. He wasn’t afraid of needles, but the large gauge had unsettled him. He watched as it was inserted and a vial was attached to collect his blood. The doctor pressed a gauze pad to the wound when he was finished and instructed Michael to keep it there with his other hand.
As they finished up, Michael heard footsteps in the hall and looked up to see a tall man in a suit enter the room. He was very self confident and moved around looking at things as if he owned them.
“We’re ready, sir,” the doctor said and stepped aside so the man’s view of Michael was unobscured.
“My name is Warden Dempsey, Mr. Chaste.” He looked Michael straight in the eye. “You are here because you were convicted of crimes against society so brutal that a judge deemed rehabilitation impossible and every appeals court which heard your case upheld the decision. There are no more appeals and no chance for you to ever leave this prison during the course of your natural life. Therefore you were transferred here, to me, to be entered into the Eternal Convictions program.”
Michael was already completely aware that he had no chance to ever leave prison, but the cold tone of the Warden drove the fact into him once again like slivers of glass. He knew that there was no escape from this nightmare and hoped at the very least to be treated civilly as he served his sentence. There was no use proclaiming his innocence any more. As the man had said, all appeals were exhausted. He felt as though the Warden’s words had sucked the life from him as the judge’s had when he pronounced his sentence.
“This facility is operated entirely autonomous from the main prison where you have been to this point. Here, there are no visitors, no computers, nor any other contact with the outside world. For all practical intents and purposes, you are deceased. Even the IRS will not contact you here so you may take joy in that fact.” The Warden smiled at his own joke. “What there is, though, is order. I run an orderly prison here with no problems. You have been cooperative thus far and I expect it shall remain so as I have no tolerance for any disobedience. Can I count on you for this, Mr. Chaste?”
Michael looked at the man for a moment and knew immediately that he despised him. Far beyond the fact that he, himself, was a convicted felon and expected to be treated poorly, this man was the type who thought himself above the rest of the world and carried himself as such. Michael respected his position, but not the man.
“Yes sir,” he said quietly.
“Very well,” the Warden continued. “In order to preserve order, we take certain precautionary medical measures to prevent aggression. The doctor is now going to give you an injection to facilitate this.”
Michael was aware the doctor had picked up the small syringe from the cart and was tapping air bubbles from it as he squirted some of the liquid into the air. He held it at the ready, waiting for the order to continue.
“Proceed doctor,” the Warden said and turned to leave. Reaching the door, he turned back as if having forgotten something. “This will be the last time we meet, Mr. Chaste. Please enjoy your stay with us.”
As quickly as he appeared, the Warden was gone and Michael was left to the doctor and guard. He looked from one to the other as if expecting an apology for the Warden’s intrusion, but neither man even changed their expression. It was time for the injection and he made himself relax as the doctor approached.
He felt the needle enter his upper arm and wondered just what he was receiving. The Warden had said it was to prevent aggression and Michael wondered if he was being injected with hormones to inhibit testosterone production or perhaps it was estrogen to enhance his inner calm. He really hoped it was neither as self gratification was one of the only releases he had in prison and he wasn’t particularly fond of the idea of growing breasts as the other guys might take an undesired liking to him.
He had no more than completed this thought and was about to ask what he was injected with when he realized he knew already. His vision blurred and a deep fog began to settle over his mind. Suddenly he was very tired and could feel his entire body relax. As he passed out, Michael realized he had been given a sedative.
Everything seemed to be moving slowly and he couldn’t understand why everything seemed out of place. Michael looked up from the bench where he was working to see his girlfriend coming toward him through the door. She was carrying something that looked like plans and he wondered why as she had never had anything to do with his work. In fact, he had not even seen her since before he began doing electronics work and wondered why she was here, but decided he didn’t care. He was happy to see her.
She laid the plans on his desk and told him to hurry up or they would be late picking up the kids. She seemed upset and he wondered why, while at the same time, he wondered what she was talking about as neither of them had children.
He followed her through the door and into a large area he could only describe as an inner courtyard with driveway passing through it. In the center was a large fountain made of very old white marble and water streamed down from the center in a heavy flow, cascading over terraced ledges to the catch basin which was overgrown with weeds.
Looking around, he realized the landscaping had been long neglected as grass protruded randomly in tall yellowing bunches at joints of the pavestone sidewalks and driveway. The area was surrounded by a red brick wall of some ten feet in height and this also was overgrown with vines and weeds. The mortar seemed to crumble in places and small bunches of plants sprouted from the cracks. In a far corner, a faded white gazebo stood in a shroud of plant life with its grey wood roof shingles covered in moss. Atop at the peak, a wind vane shaped like a rooster pointed it’s scaly green arrow at the gate where the driveway entered. Beyond the gate and along the outside of the brick walls, heavy forest shut out the sun.
“Come on or we’re going to be late,” she called to him. “Mother wants to rebuild this place and has decided to rip out all of the sheetrock in the east wing to make sure the structure is sound.”
He followed her across the courtyard and through a set of double doors, back into the house. He had no idea where they were going or even where they were, but felt the need to continue following.
“This room is going to be the new family room,” she said, walking around a large wooden structure in the middle of the room.
Michael looked down and saw that there was no floor here but rather bare earth with a rough sandy texture. The floor was uneven as well with the outer edges raised where they walked and dipping down in the center under the wood framework. None of this made sense and as he looked at the large structure in the middle of the room, it looked to him like the skeleton of a large boat which had been either built here or unearthed as the building was erected around it. As he walked around the end and saw her moving toward the back, her mother entered through a set of French doors to his left followed closely by several children.
He did not recognize the children and heard her say something about rebuilding the house since her husband had died. In his mind, he knew this wasn’t right as his girlfriend’s mother had passed long before her father and they had lived in a very small house. None of this made any sense, but he suddenly felt an urgent need to talk with his girlfriend, if she would ever stop walking away from him.
“I need for you to talk to me,” he said pleading.
“We have plenty of time to talk. You’re not supposed to be at the prison until Thursday.” She smiled and continued to walk around the framework away from him.
“That’s not right,” he said. “I’m going to be gone before you even realize and I don’t know if I will ever be able to see you again.”
Michael heard the words he was speaking, but had no idea what he meant or why he felt it so urgently. One part of his mind knew that he had parted ways with her years before, but another part said he needed her to stay with him now because he was about to face something terrible and she was the only one who had ever understood him.
“Don’t be silly.” She smiled coyly. “I’ll always be here.”
She walked around the back of the framework and he went back the other way to intercept her. Coming face to face he put his hands on her shoulders and looked deep in to her eyes. It was strange, but he could not see the love he knew should be there. Instead he felt she was mocking him.
“I don’t know how I’m going to get through this,” he pleaded. “I have done everything I could, but nothing seems to work.”
“It’s all being taken care of,” she reassured him.
“What’s being taken care of?” he tried to ask, but the words would not come.
Suddenly Michael’s neck was sore and he couldn’t speak. She started to walk away from him again and when he tried to follow, he found he couldn’t move. In fact, he couldn’t even turn his head to see where she was going, but had to follow her with his eyes until she was out of sight. He tried to call to her, but no words came and he wondered what was happening.
“There. That should do it,” he heard her say.
“Doctor, we have rising activity on the EEG. The patient is waking up”
Michael tried to look and see who the doctor was and who was talking to him, but still could not move his head. He was stuck looking out of an old multi-paned wooden window at the overgrown garden.
“I got it,” she said and then everything went black.
