2023.03.30 04:23 MongolDothraki374 Lady Genevieve Wendwater
| Template: Reddit Account: mongoldothraki374 Discord Tag: Queen of the Spartans#1290 Name and House: Lady Genevieve Wendwater of House Wendwater Age:19 Cultural Group:Andal Appearance: (Text Only) Long brown hair, hazel colored eyes, short for her age, skinny and wears glasses, youthful, bright smile, a faint scar on her forehead from a childhood incident. She wears more plain white dresses with a more bookish design. She does like to dance, and goes to parties, but is not more outgoing than that. She is shy when not dancing and is usually scribing, reading or helping with the ravens in the tower. She does smile a lot and is very studious when it comes to her duties, other than that she barely has a social life outside of her duties. Trait: erudite Skill(s): raven master(e( riding, scribe(e), scholar(e), Talent(s): poetry, writing, dancing Negative Trait(s): n/a Starting Title(s): lady Starting Location:* wendwater Alternate Characters: Gawain Buckler (Buckler) Biography Genevieve was born on the 5th moon of 181 AC as the first and only child of Ileana and Peter Wendwater. Her mom was more of a scholarly lady while her father was into horse riding and calvary. Their realm was rather peaceful and orderly, most tasks were done precisely when needed and to its best capability. The keep they held was running like clockwork, the finances, the histories all written and stored. When she was little her father and mother usually were too busy, so the maester took care of her. From a young age she loved reading, often being too eager trying to take on bigger novels that were a bit above her reading level. She would learn to read and write before she could walk. As she got older she learned to ride as well, this would be taught by her father after a heated discussion that her parents didn't have time for her. She would continue to learn from the master how to scribe, how to be a good scholar and even on occasions when she was ahead of her studies, she would learn from the raven masters at the keep. Genevieve hated wars and battles as she found them pointless, her father tried teaching her one hand weapons, but she would do it with no enthusiasm at all. She didn't care for weapons, armor, warriors, she only had her head in books. At age 12 she dreamed of going to the citadel but the place was forbidden to her, her parents were trying to keep her safe, they believed an arranged marriage would be more fruitful than sending their only daughter to the citadel. She was taught womanly etiquettes, how to act, how to cook, clean, and care for family. Her only companions she saw fit to be her friends were the ravens that were in the tower. She would often like to make names for the ravens and backstories as her favorite pastime. This soon would change as in her daily teachings when she wasn't burying her head in her novels and books, the female teacher taught her to dance, this gave her life new excitement as she learned to dance. At first she started rather clumsily, but soon got the hang of it as she understood how to coordinate different movements at once. Her favorite was ballroom dancing. Her life thought boring would bring a new flame of excitement as she attended her first dance, her parents hoping she would find someone to wed, but sadly she did not, she was rather shy aside from the dancing though she had a feeling for one of the squires in the room. She would only catch his first name, which she found quite witty and dreamy. Her parents however disapproved of this the moment they found out. She would continue her studies and help aid the keep and wendwater running like her parents have. She would continue dancing however though no suitors would be found as once the dancing stopped, she shied away and kept to herself, not even the etiquette she was taught would help as she was too shy, though loved to dance. It was like two different people inhabited her body. Her father however passed from a stroke at the age of 50, he lived a normal lifestyle though the fighting between him and Genevieve grew when he kept asking her to get wed and see to it that their houses were joined. This last fight would prove to be no better than the first fight they had and she would never forgive herself for fighting with her father as she blamed herself. With her mother already too old, she picked up a book on leading houses and politics, a fake smile on her face she looked to her destiny as Lady Geneive Wendwater of House Wendwater Family tree https://www.familyecho.com/?p=START&c=bhh6lljtzs&f=204876722371434073 Timeline: 181 AC: she is borne 193: she learn to read and write 194 she learns to walk 195 she learns to ride 201 she goes to her first dance 212 she becomes lady of the house Supporting characters Robert Wendwater - Maester Gawin Hodort - General Peter William- warrior submitted by MongolDothraki374 to ITRPCommunity [link] [comments] |

2023.03.30 03:53 cluckerluck My mother passed in September and the man who was the witness to her will has presented a fraudulent will. Need advice on pursuing fraud charges with the police.
My mother died in September after receiving a sizable inheritance from my grandmother who passed in April. She was concerned about my Father receiving money from the estate if anything were to happen to her, they had been separated for 25 years but never legally divorced. We decided it would be best she updated her will. I have texts about going over it with her intentions to not include my father. I also have texts from her that she finished it and if something were to happen her neighbor was her witness and he would be able to produce it. She unfortunately had a lethal stroke before the inheritance even paid out. My family and I went to her house to find the will the next day. The neighbor had already moved into her home and wouldn’t allow us in and denied any knowledge of a will. We had to have police come out to supervise us removing what personal belongings of hers we could gather. It took hours for them to respond and when they did, he magically had an unsigned will that named him as the heir. He admitted it wouldn’t be admissible in court but that “we should honor our Mother’s wishes or the estate would go to my father”. My mother told me she planned on leaving him the trailer but instructed my to distribute any remaining funds amongst my sisters and their children. I had access to my mothers email and he used her acct to purchase the will template and all the receipts were sent to her email, two days after she died. I sent all this info to the police and they opened a fraud case. They advised us to hire a civil attorney, because the criminal case would be difficult to prove, but to keep them updated on any changes or new info.
This past week we were finally able to have him evicted from her trailer. It caught him off guard so he didn’t have time to clear the house. My mother’s computer, that was used to write the fraudulent will, was still in the house. He changed the password and user info, so we are unable to access anything on it. I have a feeling there is evidence related to the fraudulent will, or even perhaps the original will. I am hesitant to pass it on to the police right away, for fear it’ll be forgotten in some evidence locker. Would hiring a private investigator be useful? Or should I trust that the police to do the due diligence and pass it over to them?

2023.03.30 02:45 tarnishedwattle What app do you use to share updates of your kids to family?
Hey all, this is a bit specific but hoping someone might know of an app or something that could help some expecting parents!
We do not actively use social media, but would like a way to privately share photos/updates on kiddo to our family (don't worry, we won't bombard them, this is more at their request). The problem is we have a small family network who live across the globe and who do not get along (as in decades long feuds, snarky comments, years of not talking etc).
Is there some kind of app where I can send a group message, but when recipients reply it is only to me but all in the once place, and they cannot necessarily see who else is in the chat (if that makes sense?). Does this exist?
We use Whatsapp or FB messenger with our friends but because everyone can talk to everyone I don't think it would work. Texting is tough because replies come back into the individual texts, rather than in a group setting, so it's not all in one place and I can't see what I sent.
If this doesn't exist, what do other parents do who are in a similar situation, would love some advice!
ETA: I think my main concern is with relatives bickering between themselves (or calling me to whinge about something they saw someone said), which is why I am hoping for private replies. A lot of these people have had no contact for a long time (over very, very petty things) and it's much easier to keep it that way.
Basically, I'm trying to avoid getting in the middle of their ridiculous arguments as we're on good terms with everyone, while still protecting our kid's privacy by keeping them off social media for as long as possible.

Also known as ?????? ???? Production companies : Warner Bros. Pictures. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above). “I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond.) “And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there,
too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise . "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful. There's nothing so wrong with “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naive delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length. In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film. “They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond (2022) FULLMOVIE ONLINE Is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond Available On Hulu? Also known as ?????? ???? Production companies : Warner Bros. Pictures. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
2023.03.30 01:07 tarvolon So Long and Thanks for All the Cliffs: Rankings and Mini-Reviews from an Unplanned Bingo
This post also appears on my blog, but that version has links to my full reviews for everything, as well as the visual card. My favorite reading challenge is winding down, and for the third consecutive year, I have completed a pair of Bingo cards. I’ll talk more about my themed card in a while (probably after April 1), but today, we’re looking at my first totally unplanned Bingo card. Sure, I went through the recommendation threads last April, because those were a blast, and I planned my themed card, but apart from that, I just read what I read and then checked this week to see if I could make a full card. And perhaps one or two squares are a bit of a stretch, but I did indeed make a full card.
Continuing the bit from the last two years, I have rankings, ratings, mini-reviews, and cliffhanger notes. Do keep in mind that the rankings are just for fun and shouldn’t be taken as gospel. After all, I intentionally excluded anything I rated below 14/20, so the worst of this card is very far from the bottom of my year of reading. And it can be hard to rank books with the exact same score. I have a 20-point scale and not a 50-point scale precisely because sometimes opinions can only get so fine-grained. Ask me again next week, and I may order 16 through 22—or 2 through 5—totally differently.
Anyways, I read some great stuff, let’s get to it:
1.
“Falling Off the Edge of the World” by Suzanne Palmer, “Two Spacesuits” by Leonard Richardson, “In the Time of the Telperi Flower” by David-Christopher Galhea, “The Bone Stomach” by Ziawa Jande, “The Empty” by Ray Nayler. Categories:
Short Stories, Published in 2022, Book Club (hard)
Mini-Review: It’s common for Five Short Stories to end up on top of my list because I can just cherry-pick some of my favorites of the year. But all five of these are free—two will be discussed as part of the
April 5 session of Fantasy’s Short Fiction Book Club—and I highly recommend checking them out.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: Short stories may have ambiguous endings, but they don’t tend to end on cliffhangers.
2.
The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler.
Categories:
Standalone (hard), Published in 2022
Mini-Review: The plot description may sound like Michael Crichton, with an undersea first contact intertwined with high-stakes hacking and an AI-run slave ship, but the storytelling is anything but. It’s extremely contemplative—on the nature of consciousness and of humanity’s treatment of the Other—and written in such a way that it only gets better upon reflection.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: There’s plenty of uncertainty at the end, but it feels like a story that’s meant to end on some uncertainty and not one that’s waiting for a sequel.
3.
Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura, translated by Philip Gabriel.
Categories: Published in 2022,
Mental Health (hard), Standalone (hard), Indie Published (hard), Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), BIPOC Author, Family Matters
Mini-Review: The pacing of a school novel, but without the school, Lonely Castle in the Mirror stars a group of tweens whose individual traumas have kept them out of their local middle school but who find each other in a portal world. A slow read but an easy one, this dives brilliantly into adolescent mental health, making it not just my favorite YA novel of the year, but one of my favorite 2022 novels full stop.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: Another standalone?
4.
Babel: An Arcane History by R.F. Kuang
Categories: *
Historical SFF, Standalone (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), BIPOC Author, Published in 2022, Family Matters
Mini-Review: This one is an actual school novel, set in a fantasy Oxford whose translation magic powers the British Empire, and provides an unflinching portrait of colonialism. And as fascinating as the linguistic magic was, the highlight for me was a lead character grappling with a place that has given him his heart’s desire but that will never fully accept him as one of their own—nor will they refrain from using his gifts against his native land.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: If I keep reading this many standalones, it’s gonna ruin the whole cliff severity bit.
5.
Dust and Light by Carol Berg
Categories:
Family Matters (hard), Book Club (hard), Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), Mental Health (hard)
Mini-Review: If you’ve read Carol Berg, you know to expect tight focus on a lead who will go through absolute hell before coming out on the other side. This one sets up a neat puzzle with a lead whose magic art gives him knowledge others would like hidden, and there’s no lack for danger along the way.
Rating:
18/20 Cliff Severity: This is a duology and should be read as such. The cliffhanger isn’t as bad as others I’ve read, but it still sets up a major step into the unknown.
6.
Neom by Lavie Tidhar
Categories:
Non-human Protagonist, Indie Published (hard), Published in 2022, Mental Health, No Ifs Ands Or Buts
Mini-Review: It’s a short novel that flits through a surprising number of perspective characters, feeling more like mythology in a futuristic context than like a traditional sci-fi (never mind the robot main character). But it’s a beautiful and touching read that deserves more attention.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: Reads like a standalone, even though there’s at least one other novel (Central Station) and other stories in this universe.
7.
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan
Categories:
Book Club (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), Historical SFF (hard), Anti-hero, BIPOC Author, Family Matters
Mini-Review: This is Chinese historical fiction with a thin veneer of magic, but both the magic and the politics are secondary to an exploration of several characters who don’t fit into their culture’s expectations of their gender. It's intensely character-driven and altogether fascinating.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: This is a duology and leaves plenty to do for the second book, but there’s enough payoff in the first to make it feel worthwhile by itself.
8.
Into the Riverlands by Nghi Vo
Categories:
BIPOC Author, Cool Weapon, Published in 2022, Revolution or Rebellion.
Mini-Review: Traveling companions swap larger-than-life stories during their time on the road. And then they experience some larger-than-life stories. Despite the mortal danger, this feels like a small-scale piece, and it’s a gorgeous one.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: This is the third book in a novella series that’s explicitly meant to be readable in any order. The main characters carry over, but there’s no cliffhanger.
9.
The Galaxy, and the Ground Within by Becky Chambers
Categories:
LGBTQIA List, Book Club (hard), Family Matters, Non-human Protagonist (hard), Mental Health (hard)
Mini-Review: And here is an undoubtedly small-scale piece, as a group of people from various non-human races have to deal with unexpectedly prolonged proximity after an emergency leaves them bunkered down together at a rest stop in space. Recommended for fans of character-driven sci-fi, especially ones who don’t mind the society-scale problems left unresolved while the small-scale problems are addressed.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: Again, this is part of a series, but many characters come and go—this one feels readable as a standalone.
10.
A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow
Categories:
Award Finalist, Book Club (hard), Author Uses Initials, Cool Weapon
Mini-Review: How do you rate a very fun, fast-paced fractured fairy tale that you’ll blow through in no time but forget about in a month? It’s hard for me to call this an essential read, but it is so good at what it does, with a lot of humor and a few moments of real poignancy.
Rating:
17/20 Cliff Severity: Another novella series where each is meant to be readable as a standalone.
11.
Iron Truth by S.A. Tholin
Categories:
Weird Ecology (hard), Self-Published (hard), No Ifs Ands Or Buts, Family Matters.
Mini-Review: This is a giant hunk of epic sci-fi/horroromance, as a woman crash-landed on an inhospitable planet tries to find her brother, while a military leader and his squad seek to retrieve the secrets from a disappeared ship, and an even greater danger lurks underneath it all. This takes some patience, but the payoff is real—a well-deserving winner of the first SPSFC.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff Severity: The main plot resolves, but in a way that asks a whole lot of questions of the sequel.
12.
The Last Gifts of the Universe by Rory August
Categories:
Self-Published, Published in 2022 (hard), Standalone (hard), Family Matters, Mental Health (hard).
Mini-Review: A fun sci-fi story about excavating dead civilizations—to hopefully find the secrets behind their death—turns into an exploration of grief with a surprisingly touching romantic subplot. Strong (and short!) character-driven space opera.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
13.
City of Last Chances by Adrian Tchaikovsky
Categories:
Antihero, Standalone (hard), Mental Health (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), Published in 2022.
Mini-Review: A mosaic novel about a revolution in a weird fantasy city, with a whole host of wildly self-interested characters working at cross-purposes. The writing is engrossing and the politics are fascinating, although there aren’t many characters who are especially sympathetic.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff-Severity: Another standalone!
14.
Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki
Categories:
Wibby Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), Book Club (hard), Standalone (hard), No Ifs Ands Or Buts (hard), Family Matters (hard), BIPOC Author.
Mini-Review: The tight character focus on a trans violinist running away from home makes this worth the read, as do the lush Californian setting and outstanding descriptions of both music and food. A sci-fi subplot and an ending that’s more than a bit too neat detract from the overall package, but the strengths are enough to make this well worth the read.
Rating:
16/20 Cliff Severity: Another standalone!
15.
The Magazine of Science Fiction & Fantasy, March/April 2023, edited by Sheree Renée Thomas
Categories:
Two or More Authors (hard), Five Short Stories (hard)
Mini-Review: 16 stories, along with some poetry and book reviews, and nearly all of them are good. The Black Mirror-like “Piggyback Girl” and the whimsical “The Weremouse of Millicent Bradley Middle School” stand out from the rest, but there are a couple entertaining fairy tales, an excellent piece of sword-and-sorcery, a novelette about a cat buying a dragon, and plenty more fun.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: More short stories—some of these actually connect to existing universes (including the Neom world), but they’re readable on their own.
16.
The Golden Enclaves by Naomi Novik
Categories:
Urban Fantasy, Features Mental Health, Family Matters, Published in 2022.
Mini-Review: Pays off on so many of the seeds planted in the first two books, with more than one absolutely outstanding sequence featuring edge-of-your-seat tension and buckets of thematic depth. But it’s a bit uneven, with a slow and frustrating start and an ending that felt a little too neat. Definitely worth the read for fans of the first two but probably isn’t for anyone who didn’t enjoy A Deadly Education.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Last book in a trilogy, so it ends things. You can’t really start here though.
17.
Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John Mandel
Categories:
Published in 2022, Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey, Family Matters
Mini-Review: I expected beautiful prose and excellent character work across all four timelines, and I got good prose and good character work. Some of the pandemic sections felt a hair too on-the-nose, but there was plenty to get me invested. The science fiction elements generally worked fine, though it’s not a book that really breaks new ground on plot. Overall, it’s a solid read, though not one where I totally understand the “best of the year” hype.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: This is readable as a standalone, but I have been told it is loosely connected to other books in the same world.
18.
The Hand of the Sun King by J.T. Greathouse
Categories:
Shapeshifters (hard), Author Uses Initials (hard), Family Matters (hard), Award Finalist (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard), Book Club (hard).
Mini-Review: This is structured almost like four related novellas, with each section rising to its own climax before skipping ahead to the next step in the character’s journey. The main character progresses nicely, and there’s enough plot development to make for an intriguing setup, though there’s plenty left to do in the sequel.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Another one that makes a lot of progress but leaves lots and lots of work for the second in the duology.
19.
Dead Silence by S.A Barnes
Categories:
Set in Space, Book Club (hard), Mental Health (hard), Standalone (hard), Published in 2022 (hard), Author Uses Initials, No Ifs Ands Or Buts.
Mini-Review: This promises a haunted house in space and delivers a haunted house in space. Even as a relative horror neophyte, I was able to predict most of the plot, but the atmosphere is good enough to make it a plenty engaging read regardless.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
20.
Dead Star by Simon Kewin
Categories:
No Ifs Ands Or Buts, Self-Published, Set in Space (hard), Revolutions or Rebellions (hard), Family Matters.
Mini-Review: This is a fast-paced, planet-hopping adventure about digging into the secret history beyond the sudden and mystifying rise of a small religious sect to galactic hegemony. The villains are a bit over-the-top, and I’d have liked to see more of the story in the first book, but it’s short and very hard to put down.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: This is the worst cliffhanger on the card. It reaches a waystation on the full trilogy arc, but so many of the driving questions are left for the sequels.
21.
Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire
Categories:
Revolutions and Rebellions, Book Club (hard), LGBTQIA List, Mental Health (hard).
Mini-Review: It’s a really touching found family story in which a horse-loving intersex protagonist finds a home in the portal world of the Hooflands, but with a rushed and uninspiring revolution filling out the plot. The description of childhood bullying and cultural expectations of femininity calcifying as early as elementary school are all too real and expertly done. And if the ending doesn’t maintain the level of quality, the beginning is still enough to recommend it.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Deep into a full series, but I believe it’s meant as an alternate entry point. I’m not sure I buy it as an alternate entry point, but the story is mostly self-contained, with the inevitable connection to the rest of the universe.
22.
A Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark
Categories:
Set in Africa (hard), Urban Fantasy (hard), Shapeshifters (hard), Book Club (hard), Author Uses Initials (hard), BIPOC Author.
Mini-Review: Stunning worldbuilding, mediocre mystery plot. Like many of the 15/20 stories, there’s a five-star element and a three-star element mixed together. Here, the magic-infused, steampunk alt history Cairo is the true star, carrying a mystery that’s otherwise the dashing protagonist jumping from action sequence to action sequence.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: It’s a detective story in a world where the same detective has other stories. No problem reading it by itself.
23.
The Past is Red by Catherynne M. Valente
Categories:
Author Uses Initials, Book Club (hard).
Mini-Review: This is an expansion of an award-winning novelette with a fascinating and unique narrative voice. It takes place on a floating trash island after climate disaster, and like many climate stories, relies heavily on worldbuilding. For me, the worldbuilding wasn’t enough to sustain full power over novella length, but the main character’s narration kept things interesting.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: This is an expansion of a previous novelette and can easily be read alone.
24.
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez
Categories:
Cool Weapon, Published in 2022, BIPOC Author, Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey (hard), Shapeshifters, Mental Health (hard), Family Matters (hard), Revolutions and Rebellions (hard).
Mini-Review: Gorgeous prose and a stunningly creative narrative structure buttress a fairly straightforward central story long on violence and…well, long. Unlike some stories higher on my own list, it’s very easy for me to see why some have this as their top story of the year—it takes risks and has a few elements that are absolutely knocked out of the park. But it’s just too long to live on prose and structural experiments alone, and the characters and plot are competently drawn but not quite riveting. Put simply, there’s some exceptional work here, but there are too many slow spots.
Rating:
15/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
25.
Rose/House by Arkady Martine
Categories:
Name in the Title, Standalone (hard), Mental Health (hard), No Ifs Ands Or Buts.
Mini-Review: Apparently I haven’t read many stories with names in them this year, so I have to use the name of an AI house to fill out the card. It hurts me to squeeze out an entry that would’ve easily been top ten in A Desolation Called Peace, but unplanned Bingo can be capricious. At any rate, this one looks like a locked room murder mystery but reads more like a fever dream. It’s a beautiful fever dream with lots of meditation in personhood, but it’s also hard to know just what to take away in the end.
Rating:
14/20 Cliff Severity: Standalone!
Lessons from unplanned Bingo:
- I thought this would be easy, and I suppose I successfully completed the challenge with literally zero advanced planning, so pats on the back for me. But I had to stretch for a couple squares that I noticed in late March hadn’t been obviously filled—particularly Weird Ecology and Name in the Title. I think my choices fit the squares, but I hadn’t noted them down as fits in the immediate aftermath of reading.
- As usual, there were a couple subjective squares that could be filled by seemingly everything. Does anything I read not address mental health and family? Perhaps not. Or perhaps I wasn’t strict enough defining those squares (though my ultimate choices were excellent fits, if I do say so myself).
- On the other hand, I don’t read much urban fantasy, antiheroes, or books with cool weapons. Or a whole lot with shapeshifters, though I was surprised to see them arise more than once. Award Finalist was also tricky, as I read so many books that were currently up for awards—after all, I led the Hugo Readalong and judged for SPSFC—and I had no way of knowing at the time whether they would win.
- Unplanned Bingo didn’t really take away my enjoyment of Bingo. The logic puzzle at the end is fun, but it’s the brainstorming thread at the beginning that makes this my absolute favorite reading challenge.
- In using the same template as my recap post from last year, I was able to notice a few interesting coincidences. For instance, I had an R.F. Kuang novel 4th and my Self-Published square 12th two years running. But in general, my scores were higher this year. Either I’m getting soft with my ratings, or I’m finding more and more good books.

2023.03.30 00:58 mobdeli Jackass Family Feud UNCUT - So funny, everyone's having such a good time
2023.03.29 23:32 orangek1tty What is the MOST Wes Anderson-y film to LEAST
Lots of talk how Asteroid City just looking like the most Wes Andersony again. I ask this question because the definition of Wes Anderson is going to be different for everyone. Even on rewatches. I will make my list but then also explain what it means to me in the end.
(From LEAST to MOST)
Isle of Dogs: this is still a good film. I love stop motion animation. But I felt the twee is lost in translation when Americana is applied to Megasaki. Especially when compared to Fantastic Mr. Fox, it feels like the production of the animation takes full attention and not on the Wes Anderson Aspects.
The Darjeeling Limited: from what I felt is his attempt to make a spiritual sequel to Royal Tenebaums. This is the Jackie Brown to that film. To me the train should have been the perfect setting . Owen Wilson gets hurt again, cramp space like Life Aquatic. But something didn’t exactly hit when watching. It leads me to make comparisons again which I feel is either unfair of me or something Anderson should try to avoid. I guess it’s because of the presence of Owen Wilson taking lead that threw me off. Swartzmen is sort of there and Adrien Brody in a rare role post Piano but in ways firmly fitting into the Anderson universe. I almost feel that if Scwartzman and Wilson switched roles, it would have fit better. But then again it will just re-hash Wilson’s irresponsible characters in most of Wes’s films and re-hashing Rushmore for Jason. I might need to do a re-watch to admire it again.
Moonrise Kingdom: the kids are great. But I felt the film was more them going through Wes Anderson’s world of adults being Wes Andersony. To me lacked a depth for the mains, of which his side characters who also have limited characterization just adds to the flatness of the film. Unlike the next one which switches the focus of mains to supporting cast.
The Grand Budapest Hotel: I do love this film. And when it first came out I was surprised at how accoladed it was in the mainstream. Highest grossing Wes Anderson film at the time, seemed like a break out hit and the first appearance of a lot of new Anderson Family members. But for some reason I associated that mainstream ness with an action film? Which seems to be the case by the third act.
The characterization is super strong here, very accessible with Wes Anderson world building in a very incredible level. But I also feel that a lot of his focus is on Zero and Gustave, with little room for the rest of the characters to take away from it. Whether it was just the stature of how Fiennes acted or just how the character was presented, the ensemble cast felt diminished in his light and shadow.
I feel the last comment about how Gustave is trying so hard to commit to a standard that passed last generation is just a commentary on Anderson himself and the topics he covers on his films. If anything Life Aquatic, Budapest and French Dispatch could make for a neat trilogy about holding onto the glory of the past.
Bottle Rocket: just recently watched this film and I was surprised on how strong of an entry it was right from the get. I never gotten the feeling of someone having such a realized intention of style from any filmmaker yet. Maybe because I only saw it recently, but we could see how so many things in Bottle Rocket he revisited with more experience and budget in later films. The Final Robbery is like the DNA for the gunfight in Life Aquatic. Character types are revisited with more depth. The angles, the Americana. In some weird universe James Caan was probably in all his films like Bill Murray or perhaps Bill Murray was in this film of that role. The strength of his first film is why it ranks so high as being Wes Andersony. Unrefined but still pure.
The Life Aquatic: The film I felt just propelled the Anderson fan base. Fun. Diorama. The first intro to stop animation, I think the first real attempt to weaponize cultural nostalgia as opposed to limiting it to the character’s past. If Budapest is the breakthrough to the mainstream, Life Aquatic is the breakthrough to the geek mainstream. Coupled with Seu George’s Bowie covers, this is what makes films feel personal. A remembering of a song in your own voice, in your own head and not off a record.
Rushmore: my first film. This felt so much like a Weezer album and at the time when I waited for his next film to drop (in an industry where every year a sequel comes out) the wait tooook such a long time for Royal Tenebaums to come out. But this was the original for me. At first I used to think it was the best. But as Wes got more experience and other films under his belt, it feels like just the first solid step in many.
Very solid characterization which emphasizes the twee ness of Max by contrast to the adults around him. He is not an adult….he is a child pretending to be one. I get such Holden Caulfield vibes here, without the ignorant, youthful snarkiness and more Good Will Hunting skill collection. For the longest time I would have clearly put it as part of Royal Tenebaums at his level. But now, I see it more coupled with Bottle Rocket. Together they set the template for the rest of his films to come. Bottle Rocket for intent, Rushmore for his realized style and characters.
The Royal Tenenbaums: ok imagine Rushmore….but instead of 2 weird characters we have an entire cast of it. Once again showing how exponentially increase in his filmmaking ability, this film just hits on all engines. His style and especially the world building of his sets come into play here. You can see the minutia attention to detail here. The ensemble cast really comes into play here which will continue. What is great is how he will continue to use recurring stars in the future in fresh ways.
The French Dispatch: Nothing much to say here. A collection of short films that explores art, writers, revolutionaries, basically the bohemian lifestyle? When joined with Life Aquatic and Budapest, this film weaponizes nostalgia. We only know and labels things after they are reflected upon by history. Categorizing, making an epoch, and who else to do better than writers?
But with these collection, I feel all of them should appear before other Wes Anderson films like the shorts he did with some of his other features. It’s in his narrator sometimes that sets a tone of the film….even if the film is something entirely different from what the initial narration says. While to me not the most accessible film, it is also very Wes Anderson-y in the idea that it’s a return to form…..but a form of his style but the content is something else entirely. It reeks of Rushmore hobby collective, youth being adults, Budapest absurdist action sequences and other.
Fantastic Mr. Fox: why this is the most Wes Anderson-y film is very much like Weezer’s 80’s cover album. Despite being an story not of his style, despite being stop motion animals, his filmmaking comes through so much in this film. You can see Bill Murray as a Badger, you see the suaveness of Mr. Fox like any of his other suave characters. The toy box of actors and actresses he has access to literally becomes toys to be fully used in his style. His characters becomes part of the minutia of his settings and his dialogue. You listen to the Weezer album and despite being just covers they make it distinctly Weezer style.
For me the Wes Anderson style is just how purely does his dialogue, characterization and setting come through the cast. It’s about the world building and how the characters fully fit in that world while still feeling unique but not very similar to either his previous works or others. It’s about his intent and by the end of the film how much of his intent is felt like a fingerprint on the film as opposed to feeling like playing an archetype.
