2023.05.28 16:02 Skeptic_Man Calculating Landlord; Petty Tenant

TL;DR The landlord was charging rent twice and was forced to return what they owed.
This happened in 2011, so most of it is from my memory. I was renting a condo unit in a very nice neighborhood. The landlord, whom I will call John, was very nice. I didn't know his day job, just that he was in the finance domain. This unit was his investment home.
I leased the condo for a year - from May 2010 to April 2011. John would come to collect rent on the first of every month. He preferred cash, and I had no issues paying him in cash. He never bothered me at any other time. Once I had a plumbing issue, I called him, and he promptly sent a plumber to fix it. Basically, our relationship was amicable.
In January 2011, my company wanted me to move to another location (in a neighboring state). I am into IT and needed to guide a project team that was to start in March. I negotiated with my manager to move around the end of April after my current lease expired. I informed John that I will not renew the lease, and he was cool with it.
In February, a mutual friend (I will call him Peter) came by my house and immediately fell in love with the neighborhood. He asked me if I knew of any condos that were available for rent. I told him I was planning to vacate by the end of April, and if he was interested, I could talk to my landlord for him. I also gave him John's number. That evening, I called up John and told him my friend is interested in renting the unit and can rent it from May 2011. I also gave him Peter's number to communicate directly. John thanked me, and that was that.
Around the first week of March, my wife's cousin's marriage got finalized. The wedding date was the 7th of April. We are from India, and marriages are a big thing where all the family and relatives get together for several days. There was no way in hell, that my wife would miss it. We decided that she would travel to India with my 4-years old son. I would go to the new office location, and by the time they come back from India (sometime in May), I would have everything set in the new place.
We booked the flight tickets for my wife and son. Their flight was a few (four or five) days before the wedding. When my manager came to know that I will be alone after April 2nd, he pushed me to join the new office on April 3rd. Those days, working remotely was not considered efficient.
But I wanted a few days to pack as I was moving to another state. I booked a mover to come on April 11. With all things taken care of from my side, I informed John (around the middle of March) that I was planning to release the condo on April 11. John thanked me, and that was that.
I called Peter and told him I would be leaving earlier in April. By then, John had discussed the rent with him, and they both had signed the lease agreement. Peter was to move in on the 1st of May, 2011.
Since I will be gone starting April 11, Peter asked me if he could move in from April 15 instead. I did not have any objections; I asked him to inform John. Peter checked with John, and John agreed over the phone. Peter called back and updated me.
I never thought of asking Peter for half the rent. I knew he would be paying rent for the whole month for his old apartment, and my apartment would be vacant anyway.
On April 1, John called and collected the rent in the evening. He asked me how things were going and if I needed any help. I thanked him and declined his help. I asked if he could come by in the evening (after 6 p.m.) of the 11th, for an inspection and to collect the keys.
I was impressed with John for offering help and thought him to be a decent guy. Little did I know that he had ulterior motives. He was making sure that I was leaving by the 11th.
After collecting the rent, he went home and called up Peter. He wanted to adjust the lease dates to start the lease on April 15. John was sly enough to wait till he got the rent from me and then wanted to collect the rent again from Peter.
Peter signed it but did not tell me until a few days later. When I heard this, I was livid. I asked Peter, "When did you sign the new lease?". As I suspected, John had called Peter the night of April 1, after collecting the rent from me. They signed the new lease the next day - April 2.
I called John and asked him to pay me back the rent for half of the month, as he was already charging it from Peter. He said, "No can do, you have signed the lease until the end of the month." (I am paraphrasing here; I don't remember his exact words now.)
I was mad, but he had a point. And with so many things to take care of during the move (on top of the hectic work schedule at that time), I couldn't even think I had the time to take any action against him. Normally, I am not a vengeful guy, but I wanted John to pay (and not necessarily monetarily). I stewed over it for a day or two, and suddenly an idea came to my mind, and I thought of giving it a shot.
I waited till the 10th, and on the evening of April 10, I called John and told him that he need not come for the inspection the next evening as I changed my plans. I will be moving out on the 28th of April instead. John became quiet for a few seconds. Then he said, "But you were planning to move out tomorrow." He was stammering. I said, "Yes, but I have the lease until the end of the month, so I am planning to take it slow." It was a taste of the same bitter medicine that he gave me. Then I nicely said "good night" and disconnected the call.
I don't know what was going on in John's mind, but he must have been pretty scared about the lease he had signed with Peter. As per the lease, Peter had a right to move in from April 15, but I had already paid for the whole month and I am within my rights to stay till the end of the month. If I didn't vacate, Peter could take him to court.
The next morning (the day of the move), John called me on the dot at 7 a.m. He asked me if I would consider moving sooner if he paid me part of the rent. I said yes. The poor guy materialized in a minute. It turns out he was waiting outside in his car to meet me if I agreed.
John handed me an envelope. I counted the money and was a little confused. There was $800 in it. My monthly rent at that time was $1,250, and I would have settled for $625 or less.
This was early in the morning, and I was thinking of the movers and 100 other things that needed to be taken care of that day. I was not prepared to interact with John, and we did not even talk about money the previous night. I did not expect him to come over with the money, and that too, so suddenly.
I started feeling sorry for the poor guy and was thinking of returning him the extra $175, but he spoke too soon. He wanted to know (in a demanding voice) if I was going to vacate the condo that evening, as I had previously communicated. I realized he did not deserve my compassion. I wanted to spite him and tell him, "No, can do" but I did not escalate it and said, "Yes, come in the evening for inspection."
The whole day was hectic, but the movers cleared up the house promptly. I had a few other things to take care of and a few things to donate. The evening comes, and John was there exactly at 6 p.m. He did not inspect anything, collected the keys, handed me a check/cheque (returning the full amount of the security deposit I gave at the beginning of the lease signing), and went away. No thank you or goodbye. It felt a bit weird, but there were 800 reasons to ignore that feeling.
I was a bit puzzled about why he gave me $800 instead of $625. I calculated later and assumed that he paid me back for 19 days that I would not be on the property, which comes to $792.
PS: John and Peter are not their real names. April 11th is the correct date (I can never forget it), and all other dates are approximate.

2023.05.28 16:02 PapugaOfficial Monitor power spikes with a Raspberry pi

Hi, I'm trying to measure mains voltage since it can go up to 260v. From my searching there are HATs for a Raspberry pi, but they are quite expensive and have features I don't need. Is there a device to monitor only voltage, that would be cheap?

2023.05.28 16:01 jaquessnicket AITA for sending my friend a fraudulent website

Me(16m) have a friend (17f) called Leslie. For the longest time, Leslie and I were trying to find converse chuck taylors at a good price (for context we dont live in the US so getting official converse for the same price is rly expensive). I got a pair last year off of amazon for half the price and Leslie really wanted a pair as well so I was trying to find her a pair too. Earlier this month I was perusing the internet and came across a website which looked to be the official converse website selling shoes at a discount. I got really excited and wanted to send her shoes that she might like as she was already having a shitty day. She said she didn't want to buy anything which was okay because she already felt like shit for underperforming on a test the day before. Flash forward a couple of weeks. She got concert tickets at a really cheap price and wanted to get shoes as well. She told me she was getting the converse I sent her. Upon making the payment, she realised more money had been debited from the account than she'd entered. This is when she realised the website could've been a scam and told me about it. Upon conducting some research of my own I realised the website was a scam and sent her a twitter thread of someone who had gone through a similar situation and how they dealt with it. I apologised profusely for sending her to a scam website and now she says she never wants to talk to me again and that I should break off all contact with her. AITA?

2023.05.28 16:00 Seniorbedbug An unfortunate day for the xeon build

So I was going along with the xeon w3175x ES build, however I "cheaped" out on the motherboard from supermicro (as in 500 dollars instead of 1000 for Asus board). Unfortunately the supermicro x11 spl-f board not only has x8 in 16 pcie slots, but there is onboard graphics on a VGA port and does not accept graphics cards. Because of this small dumb mistake I am past the point of getting my money back and am here to warn against buying supermicro boards unless you are an it specialist who is building a server. I will have to make up the money at work and save up for the more expensive board and the build will cost around 2100 dollars instead of the 1650 with the supermicro board.

2023.05.28 16:00 Grievous69 Missile weapons tier list - 0.96a RC10

Yea screw the order, I want to get out opinions on the new stuff first, it's more interesting. So after this one I'll go with energy weapons.
There will be two tiers listed for ships/weapons. The first one always showing how good something is in the hands of AI, the second one being for player control. If there is only one tier, then there isn't a noticeable difference in power between the pilot.
Tiers are relative, meaning something being C tier doesn't mean it's bad. It's simply niche and you can better choices available. There's almost no truly bad ships/weapons in Starsector so it would be boring to have a tier list consisting of maybe 3 tiers.
-----SMALL-----
Annihilator Rocket Launcher: B- / B
HE pressure weapon, fires in a burst of unguided missiles in a spread pattern (like Hammer Barrage) but it has very generous ammo for a small missile. It's nothing flashy and your ships will probably spam them even on targets they cannot hit. And that's good because you don't care too much about missing with 50 rockets and AI is deathly afraid of missiles in general. Compared to something homing and reliable like Harpoons, you can get much more damage out of these, provided you have some luck and your ships use them on slower targets.
Atropos-class Torpedo Rack: A
Only homing torpedo in the game (so beefy missile in translation), you can look at them as a sidegrade of Harpoons with the caveat of being weaker in fleet battle with more ships. Atropos has short range but it is very reliable, decent HE damage but you only get 2 shots. Cheapest reliable HE option tho.
Single variant has... a single missile yea who saw it coming, and it costs only a single ordnance point. Here's my question, if you plan on putting missiles on a ship, why be cheap? Go for the premium package. With this you get barely anything out of EMR and Missile Spec skill. Missiles are mostly high impact flux free weapons, go big or go home. I'd give this C tier or something idk, it's so fucking cheap, you'll just put anything else if you have it available.
Breach SRM: B
Dedicated anti-armour missile, it deals scripted armour damage that is NOT reduced by armour. Good ammo and OP cost but it is short range and honestly there's not many enemies where you really struggle with armour. For the toughest bricks out there, you'd probably bring a torpedo to do the job, or bombers. That said I still like Breaches since they're reliable and cheap.
Gazer DEM SRM: B+
Pressure kinetic beam missile so it's already niche. Each one fires a Graviton Beam for 10 seconds, and it also has their effect of increasing all damage taken to shields as long as it's firing on the target. Very nice ammo for small mount and it's dependable as it fires from a long range. Where Sabots are fire and forget to kill, here you need to commit and put pressure with your guns. Fun to use, in my opinion a bit situanional to be ranked higher.
Gorgon DEM SRM: A+
Easily spammable, Gorgons are a menace when you have lots of them. Energy burst beam means it even overloads shields quickly if it's a smaller target, and they are truly great for dealing with annoying frigates. 5 OP in a small mounts puts them on the higher end of costs but you get 4 missiles which is nice for ammo perks. Unlike Harpoons, you're going to need help with heavy armour.
Hammer-class Torpedo: A / A+
Guess this one didn't deserve to have a rack in the title, smh broken game. Fast unguided torpedo that you could maybe compare to Atropos. Both are reliable but in their own way, Hammers just fly fast and usually hit the target. And they also cost less OP and deal more damage. Just be careful you don't get in the way of a friendly Hammer cruising by.
Single variant: Same as with Atropos but even worse here, 1 OP gets you 1 torpedo, and the standard version also has the 1:1 ratio but that can actually benefit from ammo increasing perks. Stinky D tier.
Harpoon MRM: A+
If you're not sure what to exactly put in those small missile mounts, slap these on, you can never go wrong. HE homing finishers that actually have good range, they make sure that anything that's high on flux on overloaded gets bombarded with these from every ship having them. Fast frigates can avoid them without ECCM but other than that it's fantastic. There's a reason a bomber with Harpoons doesn't exist.
Double variant: Ehh it's not too bad but the refire delay is bullshit, the whole point is to unload these to finish a key target. Maybe if you have a ship with dozen of small mounts and you're reaaally hurting for OP. C+ tier since they're only 2 OP.
Reaper-class Torpedo: B / S-
4000 HE damage is all you need to crack the big boy armour ships. You only get a single Reaper for 2 OP so make it count. They are slower than Hammers but have more hitpoints, which is why AI won't always hit the mark. If we're being honest a single torpedo on a mount is nothing special even for a Reaper, but you can't deny its ability to vaporize enemies.
Sabot SRM: A+ / S+
Everything you ever wanted from a close range kinetic missile. Burst damage, avoids PD most of the time, EMP damage on hull. You get hit on shields, you're fucked, you get hit on hull, you're fucked. This is folks a very sexually active missile. The only complaint I have for them is that AI might not use them at the best time (opener) and sometimes saves them for panic moments. For player use though, absolute mastercpiece.
Double variant: Same as Harpoon double.
Salamander MRM: C
Rectal seeking missiles, Salamnders have a single job, disabling the engines. Their EMP damage might disable some weapons, but they target exclusively the back of ships. 5 OP but unlimited ammo on a cooldown. Honestly not really impactful for player fleet. Good PD or omni shields shut them down easily, you'll only have amazing moments here and there. But it is the most annoying thing on existence on the emeny side if you happen to pilot a ship vulnerable to them.
Swarmer SRM Launcher: A-
I feel like Swarmers are massively underrated, nobody talks about them. But this is how you make your ships immune to fighters and fragile frigates. Ton of ammo, cheap cost, excellent tracking and low cooldown. Only thing they don't do is damage anything bigger than your average frigate, and that's fine. They do their job really well. I'd put them even higher if they could handle Broadswords a bit better.
-----MEDIUM-----
Annihilator Rocket Pod: A / A+
Completely different from the small version, this one fires a stream of constant rockets, which is excellent HE pressure where enemies can't afford to lower their shields for long. Pairs great with low tech ships which have a couple of medium missile mounts. Biggest drawback here is ammo, you spend 100 rockets faster than you think. AI will fire them constantly which isn't horrible, but you really need EMR. It's also one of the few cases where the elite effect on a skill can screw you up. Elite Missile spec gives +50% fire rate, you really don't want that with medium Annihilators.
Breach SRM Pod: B
Pretty much the same as the small version, just fires 5 instead of 3 missiles per shot. It has more competition now but it also beats the competiition in the ammo department.
Dragonfire DEM Torpedo: D+
With a name like this one would think it's busted. No, not even close. Dragonfires are in a nutshell, energy Reapers that are "homing". By homing I mean it functions as other DEM beam missiles, while Dragonfire also have a aiming time. They fly very slowly, do their aiming laser thing, and then fire. In big fights the missile gets killed by something random most of the time. And even if it fires, most ships can move out of the beam. And if they somehow perfectly hit a ship, that's soft flux damage, unless the ship is sitting there with the pants down, but then you can just use Reapers. Which is why I won't even put a player piloting tier here, just use normal torpedoes on your flagship. Oh almost forgot the worst part, this has 2 ammo. 2 ammo for 12 OP! Insane. With all ammo boosting perks it just has enough ammo as a Typhoon Reaper out of the box. This needs a buff so it's not a meme anymore.
Gazer SRM Pod: B+
Same as small Gazers, plenty of ammo here too, it fires 2 Gazers per volley. Still niche for ships that are too slow for Sabots or really want to have this for some fleet synergy.
Gorgon SRM Pod: C-
Where the fuck did it go so wrong? For some reason it has the same ammo as Harpoons, fires 2 Gorgons per shot and has a long cooldown... The very missile that is great for bursting down, needs to wait 10 seconds to fire again. Just mount small ones and install EMR. If you want homing damage in a medium, other options are better.
Harpoon MRM Pod: B
Not a fan of them firing 4 missiles per volley, but hey it's Harpoons at the end of the day, can't be bad. It just runs out too fast without ammo perks so I have to rank it lower than the small ones. And what happens often, 4 Harpoons just overkill the target.
Jackhammer: C / C+
Would be a better pick if it weren't for Typhoons. Firing 3 torpedoes at once, with 6 ammo doesn't give you much possibilities in a fight. Very cheap though, but as I have said already, you shouldn't save on missiles if you plan of using them (unless there isn't a better version of what you want). Due to how armour works in the game, I'm almost positive that a single Reaper does more damage in the end than 3 Hammers. 4000 vs 4500 damage which is split between 3 sources.
Pilum LRM Launcher: C
Let me be clear, these are in no way bad, they just aren't flashy and their impact isn't immediate. Pilums have infinite ammo but regenerate slowly over time, so you can "spend" them, the DPS just gets lower then. Longest ranged weapon in the game, they're THE support weapon from other side of the map, they pressure targets by dealing EMP damage through shields when the enemy's flux is high. Other than that it's fragmentation damage which won't do much to both shields and armour. 7 OP for a medium missile is cheap, especially unlimited one. They have their place in the game, I just don't use them much, maybe on some carrier that is waaay behind the frontlines.
Proximity Charge Launcher: A+ / S
Chonky Annihilators is what best describes this thing. Another HE pressure weapon, albeit having shorter range than Annihilators. But the bombs explode in AOE, killing fighters along the way. Also excellent against ships, only downside is their slow travel speed. And as with Annihilators, you run out of ammo pretty fast without ammo perks. 12 OP is expensive but it's worth it.
Sabot SRM Pod: A+ / S+
Everything I said about Sabots applies here as well. Fires 2 per volley and has 12 ammo so a bit more sustain than small ones.
Salamander MRM Pod: D-
Outside of meme builds, no one uses these. Salamanders are already pretty binary, either they reach engines, or they don't. You're paying double the cost in OP for having 1 Salamander more in a volley. Maybe there are some fights in the game where this is useful, but I haven't seen that yet. You can spend your points on better stuff that always works.
Typhoon Reaper Launcher: A / S+
I thought these were great before, but Alex said "more ammo" for some reason. So 6 Reapers for 10 OP. Not much to say here, monsters on flagships. And AI can blunder one time more than before. Ships that have 3-4 of these will put the fear of god in you.
-----LARGE-----
Cyclone Reaper Launcher: A / S+
Even better than in previous patch, Cyclones are the ultimate dumb fire torpedoes. If your ship has forward facing large missile mounts, and has a mobility system or is fast, put these on. They almost don't need EMR with 20 shots. Beautiful things.
Dragonfire Torpedo Pod: D+
Well 5 ammo is an improvement, but not by much, most expensive missile in the game and has this much ammo. Reliability is the same as medium version, nonexistent. And for some dumb reason, large version has a 14 second cooldown. WHY??
Hammer Barrage: A- / S-
Cyclones with better DPS but they last for far less. 20 torpedoes and each volley fires 4, in a spread. Nice for big chunky targets but I prefer Cyclones now.
Hurricane MIRV Launcher: B- / B+
Poor Hurricane being nerfed so many times, it's still not bad, but far from the original powerhouse. Fires a single missile that splits into 7 smaller payloads which once they spawn, they lose the homing property of the original missile. Great range but AI tends to fire these willy nilly into smaller ships. It's funny to spam from a mile away along with Squalls.
Hydra MDEM Launcher: D
Mom: "We have Locusts at home" the missile. Somehow the Gorgon family just keeps getting shittier through the mount upgrades. Hydras like Hurricane MIRV have a single big missile that splits, this time into 6 (basically Gorgons). BUT 3 go to the left side of a ship and 3 to the right. As to flank it. Here's the obvious stinky thing, you don't want your damage split, unless you're playing a completionist minigame by stripping every single pixel of armour. It's nice for smaller targets and ships with narrow shields but very unremarkable otherwise. 15 ammo is nice tho. I don't even know how to go along fixing it, it's just way too meh, and Locusts are better versus small ships.
Locust SRM Launcher: S+
My favourite large missile, Locusts are going to eliminate every fighter and frigate you see on the screen. You don't need EMR, ECCM or even Missile spec. I mean it's even better with those but you get my point. Out of the box, cheap large missile that's incredibly reliable. Fires 40 fragmentation missiles that will automatically home in on nearest fightefrigate. And even with bigger ships that have their armour destroyed, this thing can eat through the hull. Many other large missiles got nerfed, but my boy is still staying strong. Of course you still need something to fight capitals and stations but this thing has you covered in every other area.
Pilum LRM Catapult: C+
Same as medium but double the cost, double the missiles fired, double the fun. Actually it's even better than that with better reload times, meaning DPS is higher than 2x of the medium version. The problem is still that you have better more impactful options. Yet I won't deny the fun of spamming the whole screen with these. Nice to keep the enemy busy with their PD and shields.
Squall MLRS: S
Still great, what a shocker I know. Lost EMP component, lost most of the damage on hull. But who cares, damage versus shields is the same, and that's the important part. Squall is a pressure kinetic missile that has 2500 range. So even before your enemies get in gun range, they have hard flux buildup. They have a lot of HP per missile so the PD can't even stop them. Faster ships can dodge the barrage, though that's a very minor downside to this MVP. Almost every enemy in the game has a shield you need to get through, Squalls will always have a place in your fleet. Until Alex decides one day to make the most bullshit end game enemy with only armour and phase ability.

2023.05.28 15:59 thelok Art Stores With Cheap Art?

There used to be an art store in Newport RI we go to that closed down:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/qAPbHzVti12nbHrb6?g_st=ic
This store was amazing because it featured real hand drawn oil art for a very cheap price with frame (usually less than 100$ for a standard medium sized canvas for everything). I’m not looking for printed art from big box stores like Target/Homegoods/etc.
Does anyone know of any alternatives in the MA/RI/NH areas?

2023.05.28 15:58 umaximu Themes and Theories

Hi FromTVEpix folks,
I've been reading a bunch of the theories posted around the traps, and I wanted take a slightly different critical approach to them. A lot of theories tend to start from a precise set of features which support their hypothesis (think of the Tarot, Slaugh, Victor's Imagination, Viking, Colonial Curse, Eldritch Entity, or Simulation / Dream / Purgatory theories), and extrapolate from there. This is an understandable function of the general mystery the show engenders, but I think that limited approaches can conceal a lot of the features which run counter to their hypotheses. I'll give two examples.
The Slaugh theory, for instance, begins with the assertion that the creatures are identical to the Irish folk monsters, and then extrapolates on several bases (including a gesture towards the eerily similar book The Watchers by A.M. Shine) to ground the theory. However, how would a creature from the folklore of Ireland explain the cables without wires or the spiders in the forest at the end of season one? No satisfactory explanation is available.
The Simulation / Dream / Purgatory theories are sloppy, I'll agree, but not impossible. The Jungian symbolism (i.e. the monsters being the shadow self, Fromville being manifested from the collective unconscious of the participants) gives this theory its depth and credibility. But this, as many have acknowledged already, is lazy; it would be too easy for the writers to cash in their chips and throw up their hands, and I would certainly find it an incredibly disappointing denouement.
I would like to focus instead on the themes of FROM, as I think they can draw to the surface some of the substrate which these theories embroider upon, and provide anchoring points for some of the theories over others. These are just some preliminary thoughts, and I'm excited to see how these themes develop as the seasons roll on. If people find this kind of analysis interesting I'll continue to post in this style.
Spoilers ahead!
*****
Liminal Spaces
The town the character's wander into along the circular road is a sun-bleached vision of American rural decay. I'm from Australia and we have many towns like this. Small towns, typically built for working communities, that are abandoned as soon as their economic purpose is served, sometimes even half-finished. Flight from rural to urban locations, particularly in pursuit of work in response to the economic crises of the last few decades, could also be an explanation of this general character. The ghost towns left behind, the ruins of things—these are liminal places.
This theme connects to the first and elaborates it. The buildings in Fromville are clearly not all from the same era. I think it might make for dull watching in the series itself, but I hope at some point we get some kind of architectural survey of the buildings and their styles. Colony house resembles a plantation style homestead; the town a 60s or 70s pitstop; the church building—while probably not a church to begin with—with its stone construction looks to be older still, perhaps even early colonial; the cave paintings in the caverns evoke the Lascaux galleries; and the odd shrine which Boyd finds the talismans in seems medieval in character. These are all forgotten and decaying places—places which you pass through, not linger in. Additionally there are decaying stone structures all around the place, including ritual structures like cairns and henges.
(I would love to hear from a heritage specialist on this, please comment below!)
You find similar scenery in novels by Steven King, or TV series like True Detective. There they appeal to a general sense of social decay. This leads into the second major theme:
Disintegration and Anomie
The people who are arriving in the town, like the architecture, are in some way cast adrift from the world. This can be caused by something as serious as drug addiction or the deaths of children, or something as facile as retirement or the sale of a company. The fallen tree literally cuts them off from these paths, causing them to deviate into Fromville. The world there is thinly held together and, much like twenty-first century life, a fine line separates its residents from extreme conditions of deprivation. Throughout the series this theme of anomie, the breakdown of social relations and moral values, and the attempt to maintain those relations and values is frequently returned to. In the most recent episode a food shortage kicked off a xenophobic response from at least one resident of Colony House.
Arguably this is a theme of much cultural fodder, as it is the stuff of everyday life, however here it has a more biting purpose. The creatures which stalk in the night are, for all intents and purposes, just as human as the Fromville residents, up until they get close. The distrust this creates, which clearly plays on the character's minds even during night-time encounters with other humans, reflects a general decay of human bonds. The "games" they play with people further cement this, reflecting an anarchic hunger and violence. Additionally, the existence of these creatures also creates rifts between the human characters, causing further disintegration, and sometimes, as in the case of Colony House, death. Isn't the reason that fool invites the creature inside his feeling of being misunderstood by the others?
The characters pursue their own disorganised agendas, held together (nominally) by Boyd and Donna. This precarious balance is easily upset, and when it does not only do the relations begin to disintegrate, the landscape and architecture do also. When they try to intervene into Fromville, the place responds violently, as if any attempt to rectify the state of affairs (i.e. by leaving) will simply displace their social disintegration into the environment, causing a new wave of social disintegrations. I couldn't help but think of the metabolic rift: how human disconnection from the environment, despite our reliance on it for subsistence, is caused by our mode of social organisation. This ecological aspect is particularly interesting to me, and I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this topic. There are some counter-indications, such as the forest's imputed ability to move, but this could also be connected.
Folklore
The folkloric aspect of this show is just so fascinatingly conceived! I don't think that the creatures in Fromville are vampires, draugar, wendigos, na slaugh, etc., but they are surely drawn from some kind of prototypical creature which contains elements of each of them. We have seen, for instance, that they do not bleed when cut (despite being warm to the touch!), that they can shape-shift, that they knock on doors and call out resident's names. Most of these folkloric creatures, from a functional perspective, are explanations for some kind of fundamental social transgression, such as incest, murder, cannibalism, sacrilege, or infanticide. The inhumanity of the creatures is a reflection of the human capacity to defy social norms, and all are described in language usually reserved for the dead: desiccated, bloated, decaying. This relates, blatantly, back to the theme of disintegration and anomie—each of these folkloric creatures are the embodiment of the most vile aspects of human societies.
Arachnids and annelids have been significant symbolic presences in FROM. Spider-webs are obvious symbols of entanglement, and their method of paralysing victims and digesting them extra-orally seems to cohere with the theme of disintegration. This makes me lean towards the Pitcher Plant theory, that Fromville is some kind of digestive system for a larger, more horrifying eldritch entity. But this is not the only symbol. Worms, a symbol of the boundary of death and life, have become a major symbol in season two. While they have a contemporary gothic resonance, they have had more positive symbolism in different periods, particularly as the object of increase rituals designed to ensure a better harvest. I'm excited to see where this goes, but I wonder if these animals are only present as thematic pap to differentiate each season.
I don't know as much about talismans, but they are pretty ubiquitous, and are subsumed within the category of apotropaic magic. The protection of a home by some kind of magical object is as old as the hills. This protection of domestic space, in contrast to the violence of the outside world, foregrounds the theme of social disintegration. To say that the talismans clinch a particular theory on account of their etchings or designs seems a little premature to me, as most etchings on stone using simple tools are sharp-angled.
At the end of the day FROM is a melting pot of different cultural symbols, and so I think the assertion that they are all drawn from American history (or from the cultures of its emigrants) is a little ill-conceived. Despite having Chinese characters there is little to no reference to Chinese folklore or mythology—Tian-chen Liu notably wears a cross. With that said, it might be possible that her name represents I Ching hexagram 25 , which would be quite welcome. Maybe someone with more experience with the I Ching could contribute here.

Thanks everyone who got to the end!

2023.05.28 15:58 Ellarasimon The Magnificence of Seagulls - Soaring Symbols of the Sea

Seagulls are soaring symbols of the sea, often seen in their graceful flight above the waves. They come in a variety of sizes and colors, from the familiar white herring gull to the magnificent black-headed gull. Seagulls have a varied diet, ranging from fish and crabs to scraps of food found on the beach. They are also incredibly resilient creatures that can survive harsh weather conditions and long journeys. With their beautiful wings and plaintive cries, seagulls are a captivating sight and an essential part of life at the sea.

2023.05.28 15:56 Ge0luv Best internal upgrades for the Trion? Best darts?

Ai-modded Trions for attention.
I just ordered the Trion and one of those little electronic targets. I want to upgrade it for accuracy just for plinking the target and random family members. I only want to open it up once and do all the mods. As far as I'm aware the only internal mods are deleting the safety, maybe deleting the slam fire, and the dart guide spring reducer. Are there any others?
I know there is this thread, I was wondering if any more parts came out. Is it typical for people to instal longer and/or brass barrels?
I kinda just want to buy a cheap 3D printer since I want to make a lot of external parts for it, what's the cheapest 3D printer that still gets the job done? I'm OK with second hand off FB marketplace, just need to know what to search for.
Also should I go with Worker Gen 3 HE or Bamboo Gen 3 darts?

2023.05.28 15:54 Delicious_Man_ Losing weight - is it worth it?

YES! It's Worth It - And Here's Why!

1) You’ll Have More Stamina

Losing weight makes it easier to keep up with your daily chores and activities – shopping, walking the dog, taking out the trash, cleaning the house, and preparing meals – without feeling fatigued or cranky from being too tired to do it at all. Stamina refers to the time you can walk, jog, or do other activities that require exertion before you become fatigued. Losing weight and being more physically active is the best way to increase your stamina, get more out of life, enjoy it more, and get more done.

2) Your Immune System Will Benefit

Fat cells aren’t just storage depots for extra energy; they’re endocrine glands. Fat cells produce inflammatory substances that damage tissues. Losing weight rebalances your immune system and decreases inflammation. You don’t have to lose massive amounts of weight to get the benefits. One study found shedding only 13 pounds was enough to reduce inflammation-producing cells to a level found in healthy people who aren’t overweight. That’s important for health since inflammation plays a role in most chronic diseases.

3) Food Will Taste Better

You may get more joy from eating your meals after losing weight. Stanford researchers found that people who are overweight or obese have taste buds that are less sensitive than leaner people. Therefore, they may derive less pleasure from eating a meal. Once the weight comes off, taste sensitivity returns, and food becomes more pleasurable again. Learning to eat mindfully by focusing on the sensory aspects of food also makes eating more pleasurable, and you’ll be satisfied with less. Plus, you’ll naturally make healthier food choices and derive more pleasure from them.

4) Less Impact on Your Joints

The more weight you carry on your frame, the more force you place on your joints with each step you take. The stress on your joints is even greater when you climb a flight of stairs. Over time, the burden of carrying that extra weight can trigger or worsen joint pain.
Research shows losing even a modest amount of weight lowers the risk of developing the most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis, and improves knee arthritis symptoms in those who already have it.
Losing approximately 5 percent of body weight has been shown to offer some relief in obese patients with osteoarthritis, several studies reveal that a decrease in body weight of at least 10 percent provides more significant reductions in pain. So, weight loss can help your achy joints.

2023.05.28 15:51 AWonderfulFuture Krishna's Last Warning - Poem

For years, in the woods they wandered,
Overcoming obstacles that squandered,
Under the scorching sun, through waters and stones,
The Pandavas emerged, shining in tones.
Fortune doesn't always lie asleep,
Behold, what lies ahead, let's keep.

To show the path of friendship's embrace,
Leading all onto righteousness' space,
To enlighten Duryodhana's way,
To avert the terrible destruction's sway,
Lord Krishna arrived in Hastinapur's realm,
Bringing Pandava's message at the helm.

"If justice is divided into two,
But still obstacles continue to accrue,
Then give us just five villages fair,
Preserve your entire land with utmost care.
We shall find happiness there in grace,
But not raise a hand against our kin's embrace."

Duryodhana could not grant this plea,
Nor embrace society's blessings, you see,
Instead, he set out on a twisted trail,
To conquer what seemed impossible to assail.
When destruction befalls upon mankind,
First, wisdom perishes, left behind.

Lord Krishna roared with mighty sound,
His divine form radiating all around,
The mighty elephants swayed in fear,
As the angered Lord made his words clear,
"Bind me with stronger chains if you dare,
Yes, yes, Duryodhana! Try and snare!"

"Behold, the sky's rhythm within me,
Behold, the wind's melody I decree,
In me, all sounds dissolve and blend,
In me, the world's rhythm transcends.
Immortality blossoms within my core,
Destruction sways, forevermore."

"My radiant forehead rises high,
Vast is my chest, the earth's sky,
My arms encircle all existence,
My feet touch Mount Mainaka's resistance.
The stars and planets that shine afar,
Reside within my face, bright as a star."

"If you have vision, see the undivided,
Witness the entire cosmos, provided,
Moving and unmoving beings, the world's frame,
Mortal humans, celestial flame.
Countless suns, countless moons gleam,
Countless rivers, oceans in their stream."

"Countless Vishnus, Brahmas, and Shivas,
Countless ocean lords, the wealth-givers,
Countless Rudras, countless times unfold,
Countless world protectors, firm and bold.
Bind them with stronger chains, if you dare,
Yes, yes, Duryodhana! Try and snare."

"Behold the realms of Earth, Atala, and Patala,
Past and future time's grand gala,
Witness the genesis of the universe,
Behold the great Mahabharata's fierce curse,
This Earth is woven with the threads of the deceased,
Find your identity, where do you feast?"

"See the celestial tresses in the sky,
Peer beneath, the realms deep and high,
See the three aspects held within my hand,
Witness my fearsome form, vast and grand.
All beings find their origin in me,
And return to me, eternally."

"From my tongue emerges fiery flame,
The breath of life within each being's frame,
Wherever my glance doth alight,
Creation begins to smile, bright!
When I close my eyes, my vision withdrawn,
Death casts its shadow, darkness at dawn."

"Why have you come to bind me?
What great chains have you brought with thee?
If you wish to bind me in your mind,
First bind the boundless sky you'll find.
The empty cannot bind the full,
When can it bind me, let it be known!

"You did not heed words of welfare,
Failed to recognize friendship's care,
So now, I too shall depart,
Reveal my final resolve, impart.
No more pleas, the battle shall ignite,
Victory or death, the ultimate fight."

"The stars shall collide and clash,
Fire's fury upon the earth shall flash,
The serpent's hood shall sway,
Monstrous time will have its say.
Duryodhana! Such a battle shall be,
Never before, never again, you'll see."

"Brothers against brothers shall break,
Poisoned arrows shall pierce and ache,
The cunning fox shall plunder delight,
Fortune of mankind shall take flight.
Finally, you shall be overthrown,
The left-hand of violence, alone."

The assembly fell silent, filled with fear,
Hushed or unconscious, they did appear.
Only two men stood undeterred,
Dhritarashtra and Vidura, undisturbed.
With clasped hands, they stood in bliss,
Fearless, both cried out, "Victory! Victory!"

2023.05.28 15:51 FancyAir9387 Ownership of lost dog?

Context: About 5 years ago our 10 year old dog got out of the yard, she is registered and chipped and was registered as lost through the microchip shortly after she got out. Since then we’ve moved interstate (QLD).
Fast forward to this morning, I get a call out of the blue from a vet saying the dog has been brought in for some issues she’s been having; low and behold some person found her 5 years ago and has had her for the entire time without ever scanning the chip.
The vet assured us that because the chip had my information on it, I am the legal owner and responsible for the finance side of vet fees and the bill needs to be paid before she can be discharged. Several hours go by and a few back and forths with the vet, we end up booking same day flights to NSW to collect the dog and pay vet fees (about $1750 for vet + $250 for airfare) to drive her back home to QLD.
Get to the vet after delayed flights at about 11PM and the vet tells us that we don’t have legal ownership of the dog because the person that picked her up has held her for the last 5 years and the dog is legally theirs now, despite microchip and registration both having my information and being told we need to pay the near $1,700 invoice before discharge.
I’ve had a look online and from what I can see if my details are on the chip & registration, the dog is legally mine but the vet is adamant that we aren’t. Who is correct and what are my options besides taking the dog and legging it out of there as fast as possible (for legal reasons, this is a joke).

2023.05.28 15:47 AZNM1912 Harry’s Razors - 13 Pack - Great find!

I switched to Harry’s razors a year ago. My last order from another retailer cost me $32 for 13 of them so I was looking for alternatives (go ahead, call cheap. I’m good with it!). Anyway, I went to my local Costco and found the 13 pack for $24 which was an awesome price so I picked up a couple packages. I tried Harry’s several years ago and didn’t like them. I tried again about a year ago and notice the quality had improved. Check them out if you need razors.

2023.05.28 15:41 XxXOptimusRhymeXxX '02 Accord LE 2.3 L 4-Cyl Rough Startup Idle

Hey all,
I have an '02 Accord I love and try desperately to keep alive (187k miles) - currently having an issue I'm having some trouble diagnosing online and wanted to consult the wizards here for input, I've only recently been learning about working on cars from teaching myself to fix issues as they come up with this one.
The symptoms are that when I start the car up in the morning it feels fine, but if I drive it somewhere and then leave in less than like 30 minutes, when I start the engine back up it idles very roughly and shakes the car for about 20-45 seconds. After that time it typically stops itself and goes back to normal, but if I get ahead of myself and apply gas while still shaking, it triggers check engine light and pulls codes P1399 and P0303 (random misfire and cylinder 3 misfire). Can still get it from point A to point B without worrying too much but obviously something's wrong and I don't want to case permanent damage ignoring the problem.
A few misc. issues with my car I'm aware of that may or may not have anything to do with this issue:
-I'm noticing oil leaking onto the engine just below the distributor, suspect a bad O-ring
-As far as I can tell my radiator is full but I have to periodically top off the coolant overflow tank back up to the min line. Might chalk this one up to my lack of knowledge but as far as I know this coolant shouldn't be going anywhere except the radiator or that tank, no clue where it's going if the radiator's full with no obvious leaks and no cracks in the overflow tank.
-Mechanic in January advised my air filter needs to be replaced, didn't do this at the time because I needed a different expensive repair and wanted to get back on the road as cheap as possible without failing inspection.
-Cruise control not working, tried several different switches from other junked Accords with no luck, fuse is fine so I think it's either a brake issue, electrical issue, or I've been unlucky enough to get 3 switches all broken.
What I've done so far:
-New spark plugs, no change.
-New spark plug wires in the mail, don't think this is the issue but replacing anyways because it's probably past time. If this is the problem I don't think engine would idle smooth in the morning.
-Planning to yoink the air control valve out to check for carbon buildup & clean today.
-Planning to replace the air filter today that the mechanic told me I needed to replace 4 months ago (hehe).
Would love to hear anyone's experience/suggestions/thoughts on if I'm looking in the right places or not. Wondering if carbon buildup in intake manifold may also be an issue based on the P1399 code but hoping to avoid pulling it out of my car if I don't have to. Any recommendations are appreciated!

We're in the Daytona Beach area, so Rockville hotel rates ran through pretty much every penny I had. A few days ago, my boss fired me because she found someone to fill the position cheaper. I've gotten another job, but I don't have anything right now. We barely got the hotel paid for last night. We're at an ecoco lodge so it's really cheap, but I had to borrow money from amscot and that was only $100. I've got $11 to my name and I'm out panhandling again. My wife gets her check on the first, once a month, and we'll be good after that but I'm worried about keeping a roof over my 2 year olds head for the time being. I won't get paid for a couple weeks and I can't panhandle while at work. If anyone is willing to throw anything my way it'd be heavily appreciated. If anyone's down to discuss any type of loan, I have a broken car and no insurance still sitting at our old apartment that I'd really really like to figure out what to do with. I'll sign on whatever terms you want for that, but this hotel is my main concern right now. It's about 110 a night, and after memorial day it goes back to 70.
